Dear MBTA passengers,

I take the trains everyday and the following is advice for both everyday passengers and tourists. Please, take it to heart and remember that what you do affects others:

1. Do NOT stop in the middle of the platform when you are in the middle of a flow because you suddenly realized you are walking in the wrong direction. This causes uncomfortable collisions and back ups. I you must turn around, head out of the flow first.

2. Don't stand in the middle of the only throughway on the platform in large groups trying to decide where you are going. Get off the damn platform and make way for those of us who do know where we are going and how to get there. I can't tell you how many pointless times I've been bottlenecked due to people just standing in the middle of the platform in packs gossiping.

3. Don't take up three spaces on the bench waiting for the train. I know we all have our personal bubbles, but some of us have been on our feet for a very long day and want to sit down, so please, don't let your bags take up needed space.

4. Stop cutting me off. I don't like having to swerve quickly to avoid your elbows and shoulders. It's rude and there's no need for it. Here's a clue, there's more than one train a day, you'll make it to wherever it is you are going.

5. If you have a backpack or bag bigger than a small purse and the train is crowded, take it off and put it between your feet. This creates space for people to get on the train as well as letting us have a little breathing room. Really, you can stand to take it off for a few minutes.

6. Don't rough house on the platform. I've been shoved infront of a train once before, I can assure you the next to do so will get more than a slap on the wrist. Accidents happen, but most can be prevented. Please realize that a yellow strip is not enough to keep people from getting hurt.

7. Don't block the platform and force people to walk on the yellow strip. Some of us, for aforementioned reasons, do not like doing so and this can easy be prevented. So please, just remember others probably need to be where you are, so lets try to be a little more courteous.

8. LET PEOPLE OFF THE TRAIN BEFORE YOU BOARD!!! You'll get on, just chill out. But we need to get off, so please just step aside and let passangers who have reached their destination get off first.

That should just about do it. Remember it's about common sense and sommon courtesy. Go a little extra for someone else and you may just find everyone reaps the benefits.

Have a nice day,
Julie
