We’ve had some lovely sunny days days this past week and apart from a tiny cold spell and some frost on a few of these nights, the coming week its only going to get better. But don’t be fooled! The night temperatures can kill tender plants as I’ve found out many times before due to my impatient nature.
Only by counting back the weeks to when you sowed your seeds back in late January, early February do you realise you can’t switch back the clock to give them those vital 10 weeks that they needed to get up to the vital stage they are at.
Vegetable groups that withstand the cold April nights are alliums (the onion family), broad-beans, peas, brassica and most green salad leaves.
Vegetables that should not go outside for at least another month are courgettes, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Seeds that you can sow outdoors now include carrots, beetroot and some salad leaves. You can plant potatoes and onions this time of year and its now time to sow beans indoors.
Here are some pictures of April flowers that will bring pollinators into my garden and give the borders depth and colour, the pear tree that I moved back in December full of blossom and photos of my blue bells which I’ve always associated with the month of May.
