Storm took me to see Saw II last year with Marcus, and Marcus wants to see the the 3rd one with us again. Last year, Storm and I also saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we somehow connected it to the themes in the Saw movies. Wonka was trying to make children who are already spoiled beyond belief to actually not be so self-centered. They were punished and for once in their lives, not loved on and smothered on by an important person (they were spoiled by their parents, but they see an iconic figure, Willy Wonka, and he is totally nonchalant to them. Great way to put a person in their place..) When they were in his factory, they were surrounded by candy (their obsession, or something they thought was so easy to get) and it was the candy, or something excessive in their character (chocolate--Augustus Gloop's gluttony), for example, that brought them their "downfall." It's meant to be a family movie so it only hints at what was done to them, instead of showing the worst of the worst (like the Saw movies). It's very similar how they treat the 4 children and the 'test subjects/victims' from Saw. The theme of wanting a person to appreciate their life and their blessings. ...great movies :D
Anyways..
Throughout this past week and a half, maybe, I've been just.. bursting all over Saw III. Why? They have painfully human characters, they leave some parts of the movies up to the viewers (and when they don't, it usually comes back in later for a reason), the cinematography (it's very cheap but they make it look much more expensive), the themes.. oh god, the themes. Jigsaw's reasons for playing games with people.. I mean, it's different. Usually the villain will have a horrid childhood and the only way to compensate will be to inflict evil doings on people. It doesn't make the villain better, probably only worse, because they become addicted to sadistic violence, since that's the only time they ever feel empowered and confident in themselves instead of weak, as they usually felt. The character Zep from the first Saw is a lot like the the typical villain, since he's definitely sick. But even Jigsaw knows that's wrong, and I can actually agree a lot with most of the things Jigsaw believes in and does. He so wants people to appreciate everything in their lives, even what they thought was unimportant/mediocre. If you were drinking your very last glass of water, it'd taste different, wouldn't it. You'd savor it and enjoy it so much more.
Man, those movies are good. :3 And I have a strange old-man obsession with Tobin Bell that my friends make fun of all the time, but it's all good. :3
