fail, canada

I don't have a D: icon. I need one. Fix'd!

We knew it was coming. They said it was coming. Another Tory minority. Sigh. I'm trying to look on the bright side, really, but it's just like November 2004 all over again. Except worse, because it's my country this time. WE re-elected the douchebag.

Bright side: At least Harper didn't get the majority he could have. Realistic side: he still got more seats. Oh, and NOW he'll actually follow his fixed-election law, so we're stuck with him for another...ohgod. Oh my god.

I don't know, this all feels very foreboding, to me.

Mulroney-ish.

*shudders*

I'm amazed at how the Liberals bled themselves dry in Northern Ontario. That's one thing I never thought I'd live to see. N. Ontario has been a stronghold for the Grits since the dawn of time - all any incumbent has to do to be re-elected is say he's running again. But since 2000 or so the NDP's popularity has been skyrocketing. They've been chipping away at the Liberals in bits and pieces (Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie), but this election finally marked the tipping point. The Liberals didn't just lose, they collapsed. Now nearly all of N. Ontario is orange.

In A-M-K (longest electoral district name ever!) Mindy's mom finally beat Brent St. Denis. She was 3,000 votes behind him in the 2004 election, only lost by 1,000-something last time, and slaughtered him by 5,000 votes today. That's an incredible turnaround in four years.

Since I grew up there (and moved away just when the tables were really starting to turn) it's been interesting to watch the paradigm shift, but in reality I don't think a whole lot is going to change. It may look like a landslide victory for the NDP, but they only picked up 5 seats up north. Huge ridings, sure, but still no people living in them.

And Guelph is just a little red speck in an endless sea of blue. I guess they managed to get out the student vote, because if lawn signs were any indication (lol because that's totally predictive), it seemed like the Conservatives would take it. But the Liberal guy just barely managed to squeak through. And the Green candidate got a mind-blowing 21% of the vote. It's definitely not your typical S. Ontario city ^^

Well, nothing left to do but welcome the forthcoming recession with open arms. Oh no, that's right, we're Canada, and therefore immune to it just because. Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister!

LOL four years ago I never would have thought this possible, but I'm buoyed by the current situation south of the border. Why is it that we're never on the same side of the political spectrum? Now Canada's getting more and more conservative, but at least America's swinging left.

Obamarama, don't let us down.

complainy, ew politics
