Heavenese

I'm not sure if I can say that I believe Heaven exists. But if it does.....

You see, the head of the CSUN Deaf Studies Department, Dr. Lawrence Fleischer, passed away yesterday evening. I was not particularly close with him, although he was one of my current professors and had been my professor in the past as well. Many people speak highly of him and he was well-known throughout the Deaf community. Of course, he was Deaf and communicated primarily through the use of American Sign Language.

Dr. Fleischer's passing has reminded me of the loss of my grandmother. I'd like to believe that they are both now in Heaven, if such a place does exist. But my grandmother spoke Armenian.

If Heaven exists, I'd like to believe it's a place where everyone communicates using the same language - neither a language that is signed nor spoken, but a language that is somehow understood between the residents. Be it Heavenese, Heavenian, or Heavenish, I hope it is a language through which nothing is ever miscommunicated.

If only.
