O Jove, teach me how to choose: Incline me to comply, or help me to refuse... -Semele

I just read something very disturbing. According to Newsweek, the CIA has admitted to using a torture practice called waterboarding on terror suspects. Waterboarding, or forcing large amounts of water into a person's nose and mouth to simulate drowning, was less recently used by agents of the Spanish Inquisition. Yeah, I shit you not. Citoyenne, you are quite tall actually. I don't think I've ever met a woman as tall as you; myself, being about 160 centimetres, am considered very tall. Perhaps you have mis-measured?

And you're reading a play about Jean Moulin and la Pucelle d'Orleans? I've met citoyen Moulin, but I'm fairly certain he could not have have known Jeanne d'Arc, since I knew of her when I was alive and he was not born until after my death.

So you've enjoyed the companionship of Mssr. Moulin but poor Jeanne can't? That would be a pity, were it true. Besdies, can you think of anyone from history more deserving and in need of the patented Moulin sexperience than our dear good Maid?

Oh dear. Did I say she couldn't? If she were willing to show up, I suppose she could. But since she hasn't....Well, they weren't exactly alive at the same time. I really should not be laughing at this.....but perhaps not.

(Laugh away! The jokes are my favorite parts! After hearing the tapes of the reading, I told my director that I was supprised we didn't get more loud laughs. At which point, he patiently pointed out to me that martyrdom isn't that funny.

Le sigh. I just know when it finally gets produced I'm gonna be standing in the lobby going 'Dude, why aren't they laughing?!' Methinks I'm going to be in for some strange looks from the coat check girls.)

If martyrs have a sense of humor they may make jokes concerning their fate, but surely you must understand that, even if they are funny, many may feel awkward laughing at them?

It (hopefully) breaks down like this:

Martydom: Not funny.

These two Martyrs: Not funny, but ultimately uplifting.

Their conversation over two nights before their deaths: Possibly funny.

...In which Jean spend much of the time subtly macking on Joan: Hi-freakin'-larious!

At least it is at times. I know most people are saying it's uplifting and challenging and makes them want to live differently - and those notes make me float a foot off the ground, to be sure! But it's the funny moments that make me feel like I really nailed the piece. If there weren't a few odd moments of humor, it wouldn't feel like life, and without that some of the impact would be lost.

(Yeah, I'll stop going on about writing now. I tend to rabbit on quite a bit when I get going!)
