It was a natural legacy for a Gilmore to be resolute. Lorelai Gilmore had always proven this right. Her first pregnancy, at the simple age of sixteen, and her choices she had made for her life with her daughter proved to be guided by her pride.
Now, situated at the kitchen table with a hot steaming mug of fresh strong coffee, possibly her fifth of the day, she remembers all of her memories from her childhood to her marriage to Luke Danes, her miracle of coffee, to her current swelling belly where she carried another life. Anyone who looked at her at this moment in time would’ve left her at peace, alone with her thoughts, although Luke knew much better than that. Her contemplating her mistakes and how she had done wrong with her daughter all lead to the moment he paced to her side.
"Why the sad face?" He placed his comforting hand on her shoulder. This movement awoke her from her slumber of nothingness.
Her blue eyes met his, "Nothing, I’m just conversing with my coffee." What an obvious lie. Another trait of a Gilmore was they were suckers at lies.
"Oh, so this coffee, it can mind read?"
"Yes. It doesn’t have a cape but it is very much like Superman." She forced a smile on her pretty face. He can see straight through her, like she was a white lacy curtain made out of the transparent type of material.
"What is really bothering you?" He sat on the seat next to hers, her eyes following his every movement.
"Um … just, this pregnancy." She was, in fact, pregnant, again. This time she had someone to help her along the way, and she obviously had the knowledge of how to raise a child and what all of the signs meant. "I … this is really hard but, I just don’t want to screw up. I’ve already screwed up with Rory. She’s living with the people who I asked for help and they backstabbed me, she’s out of college and she’s doing community service. I don’t want to be the fault of this baby when it is born." Tears swelled up in her eyes, threatening to cascade down like a wondrous waterfall.
"But, Lor, you are not and you won’t be a screw up. Hell, I’ll be the screw up, not you. Look at Rory! You mended her relationship with her grandparents, you threw your pride away when you asked them for help for her, Rory’s an adult now, and her decisions and faults are hers, not yours. And this baby, this baby will be special and lucky to have you as a mother, and never think of yourself negatively." Luke planted a lingering kiss on her forehead.
"Wow, Luke, I never knew you were the mushy sort of guy." Tears stained her face as she smiled. He knew he had a mission accomplished, he loved her smile, her presence as it radiated light all around his darkness.
"Now … do you think it is wise to consume coffee while you are pregnant?" Luke regained his normal composure and demeanor.
"How do you think Rory got her addiction to the wonderful liquid?" Lorelai playfully smirked as Luke shook his head. "Now, this reminds me of my favourite fairytale, Cinderella. Prince Charming gives Cinderella back her glass slipper, but in this case, it is coffee …"
Her voice fades away as the smiles and laughter of the happy couple drown out any negativity that may have rested on their shoulders moments beforehand.
