The Peacock - Vince POV (Part two)

Vince Noir took a second look in his full-length mirror, then a third, and just to be certain, a fourth. “ These should do the trick” he mused as he took in his reflection. He was wearing a pair of red flares, picked up that afternoon in a Vintage Clothing store. There was no way his best friend Howard could ignore him in these!

“Hey Howard” he called coming out of the bedroom “Check out these red flares. They’re genius. I might wear them tonight to the Velvet Onion. Bollo’s DJ-ing again. Err…you coming?” Striking a pose, Vince was hopeful for a reaction from his best friend, but he was frustrated as Howard barely glanced at him and brushed him off with another excuse.

Vince tried to hide his disappointment, and sulked back off to his bedroom. Howard had been so distant lately; all he was interested in was working in the Nabootique, and playing his Jazz records.

Vince sat at his dressing table and began to cleanse his face; he was due to leave around eight, so that only left him 4 hours to get ready.

Howard and Vince had been best friends for years, but for Vince it was more than that. Spending time with Howard made Vince happy. He loved his quirky ways, his funny clothes, his shocking taste in music…. in fact Vince Noir just loved Howard Moon. He always had. Lately though, Howard had been putting space between the two friends and Vince was doing everything he could to try to remedy that.

Everything seemed to change a few weeks ago. Vince had given Howard a gift that he thought would have delighted his friend. It was a rare Jazz Lp that Vince had tracked down to a specialist vinyl sale, thanks to one of his DJ friends. Briefly, he thought he had impressed Howard; his friend had even hugged him! Vince had enjoyed that hug, but since that day Howard had been backing off, closing Vince out. Therefore, Vince had been going out more, in the hope that Howard would join him. He had been buying new outrageous clothes in the hope that Howard would notice him again. However, it was all having the opposite effect. Vince was losing Howard, and that was a horrible thought. “I’ve got to try again tonight,” Vince decided. He knew Howard would never understand how he felt about him, but he couldn’t risk losing their friendship.

Naboo had watched the exchange between his friends from the kitchen. He shook his head - it was obvious - if those two were in primary school, they would be chasing each other with worms, or hiding their pencil cases. “This needs a Shaman’s touch” he decided heading into his bedroom.

An hour later, Naboo knocked on the door of the bedroom shared by Vince and Howard. “Hey, Naboo. Come in” Vince said. “Vince, this coat came in this morning in a delivery of vintage clothing. It’s a bit specialist for our customers, so I thought maybe you might like it?” Naboo held up a Peacock green suede coat. It had Peacock feathers sewn onto the cuffs and coattails. “WOW Naboo, that coat is genius. Can I really have it?” Naboo nodded “I thought it might cheer you up, your long face is bad for business….oh..and one more thing; make sure you wear it tonight. It’s sort of like an advert” “For the Nabootique?” Vince questioned. “Something like that” Naboo smiled “I’ll leave it in the storeroom for you” “Aw, thanks Naboo” Vince replied, feeling a lot cheerier. (Well, it was a fantastic coat.)

Once Vince was happy with what he saw in the mirror, he headed downstairs to find Howard. He wanted to show him the effort he’d made with his outfit tonight. As he entered the Nabootique, he saw his friend sitting at the shop counter, playing with his paperclip collection. Vince smiled and felt his heart skip a beat. Howard looked up and sneezed, “Bless you,” smiled Vince. “You all right, Howard? You’ve not got a cold coming on have you?” Howard did not reply, instead he just gave him a funny look. “Naboo gave me the most amazing coat Howard. It came in with a delivery of vintage clothing this morning. Check it out!”

Vince reached into the storeroom and pulled on the unique coat. He stood in front of Howard - he could not fail to notice him now! He spun around to show off his fabulous attire “Well what do you think?” Vince prompted, hoping for Howard’s approval. However, he didn’t get it. Instead, his friend told him to go. Vince was crushed. What was that look in Howard’s eyes? Anger? Contempt? Weariness? He didn’t know what he had done to deserve this treatment from his oldest friend. Perhaps whatever had broken could not be fixed after all? Vince filled his voice with forced excitement “Don’t wait up” he said, but Howard showed no reaction.

Although Vince tried to enjoy the evening at The Velvet Onion, he couldn’t relax. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get Howard out of his head. He decided he needed to talk to him, tomorrow, to find the underlying cause of their problem. Distracted, he headed home.

It was about 3 am when Vince climbed the stairs to the flat above the Nabootique. He crept quietly into the room he and Howard had to share. The last thing he wanted to do was wake up Howard, and cause an argument. To his surprise though, the bedroom light was on and Howard was sitting up in bed.

“Is something wrong?” he asked concerned. He saw his friend’s face soften “I forgot to tell you something.” Howard smiled.

Vince moved across the room “What?” he questioned. He watched Howard stand up. The taller man reached over and put his hand onto Vince’s cheek. Heat and electricity raced from Howard’s gentle touch. At first Vince was unsure what the touch meant but he melted into the feeling and gazed at Howard. “I forgot to tell you how incredible you looked tonight.”

Vince couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He struggled to reply. “I’ve waited a long time to hear that.”

Howard nodded. “I’m sorry for how I’ve been treating you. I was so confused about my feelings for you. I needed to understand where this was going.”

This was like a dream. Did Howard have feelings for him? Vince smiled, deciding the risk was worth taking “I know where I want it to go; I was just waiting for you to catch up.”

Vince felt his spirits lift, his heart started to thump. He felt Howard drop his hand and trace his finger down his chest. His touch was electric and Vince could not help shiver. Vince saw Howard lean to him, felt his lips brush his own. There was no mistaking Howard’s feelings now. He let himself be pulled into Howard’s body. He felt the heat and desire burn in him “Howard,” Vince whispered, barely more than a breath. “It’s always been you.”

“I know, little man. I finally get it.”
