[The grace of the woman's swordsmanship catches her eye. Tybalt would be quite jealous to see anyone wield a sword so well.]

The machines do seem to find us when we are not aware quite often, Lady. Your skill with a sword is remarkable. I have not seen such before. Were my cousin here, he would be most impressed as well.

[And she blinks.]

A holiday for lovers? It is the celebration of the birth of Christ, Lady....

That they do. But my skill is only just passable, and I have been neglecting it for a long while, here.

[An owlish blink back.]

The birth of who?

You are most humble, Lady, to say such things.

[Another blink.]

Christ. The Lord Jesus, son of God in the Christian faith. The holiday is named for him.

[And realization hits.]

You are of a different faith, Lady. And yet, you celebrate the holiday? That is most curious. May I ask from where and when you come?

You are far too kind, Nee-san.

I do not know of that god, but it is good to know which we are paying tribute to.

Where I come from, no we do not celebrate this Christmas. The turning of the year, yes, that is a time of celebration and new beginnings. And festivals for various things throughout the year, but. Christmas is a tradition in the living world. Many families celebrate it, and I learned about it from-- from my friends. They did not mention this Christ-sama of yours, but there are apparently a great many traditions associated with it in Japan.

You have not heard of him at all, and yet you know of Christmas.... Truly the world after my time is a strange one. What are the traditions in Japan surrounding the holiday, Lady?

[Blink.]

To speak as you do implies that you are not a part of the living world, Lady.

Christmas, in the living world, seems to have moved quite a ways from the honoring of a particular god, yes. At least in the parts I am most familiar with. In Japan... Well, there seems to be the idea that it is somewhat romantic? At least what I gathered. And families like to have a big chicken dinner together, and a special cake afterward. Also, many people wear 'santa suits', which are red and white.

To put it most simply, I am not. ...Most of the time, I suppose. I died over a century ago.

I...see. The customs seem most strange to me, Lady. But perhaps such things are more commonplace in the future. And Japan - those whom I know here from Japan do not know of Christ or his followers - so perhaps there is something lost in the move to a new country?

[She bows her head.]

My condolences, Lady.

So it would seem. Things lost--and gained as well, I would imagine, traditions and so forth. And it goes the other way as well, I should think.

[An unconcerned shrug]

I don't remember it, or my life, at all. I believe I must have died as a very young child. Not uncommon. My life in Soul Society was.... more than full enough for me.

[She nods.]

Most likely. There are many things which change over time.

[She blinks at this.]

Forgive me, Lady, but you do not look to be a young child. And, if I may, what is Soul Society?

Well, no, of course not. I was when I first came into Soul Society though. Soul Society is... it's where you go, after you die.

You are able to age after you have died in your version of Heaven, Lady? That - that is quite remarkable. I have not heard of such happening in the Christian Heaven.

If you survive the Rukongai slums, at least. Or are lucky enough to be born inside the walls of the Seireitei. That is the usual way though, yes, for those who die in the living world--where I am from, at least.

[She has no idea about what the lady speaks, so she nods.]

It is interesting, the differences between the different types of Heaven. I would not have thought there were different Heavens before I came to this place.

Yes I suppose it is. Not that we have much of a chance to find out here, unfortunately...

We do, Lady, by speaking of our various traditions and understandings, as we are doing now. I would have known nothing of your Soul Society had we both not been in this city. And there may be others who have different sorts of Heavens here as well, from whom we may find out more similarities and differences.

[And only then does it occur to her that she doesn't know the woman's name, nor has she introduced herself. She curtsies.]

I am Juliet Montague, Lady. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, and to speak with you regarding such things.

Ah, well, perhaps? You have seen your world's afterlife too then? 'Heaven', you called it?

[In response, Rukia gives a proper bow.]

Kuchiki Rukia, at your service, Juliet-dono. A pleasure to meet you as well.
