Another one bites the dust

One of the burners just killed himself. He’d made an attempt previously, but some people had written it off as temporary, relationship-related drama, etc. Nope, he succeeded this time. But the problem is in how he did it. He jumped off a 10-story building (or at least, that’s the info I’ve got as of now). #1, You can’t even have an open-casket ( Read more... )

If i ever do it, i'm jumping off a tall(er) building into a crowd. I wanna inconvenience as many people as possible on my way out. Maybe set myself on fire too.

But I'm a jerk.

Actually, I really like that plan. With the fire thing, people will talk about that for many years. You'll become a legend. Even better, do it holding a couple of 5-gallon containers of gasoline, too. >:)

I gotta say, your initial post kind of pissed me off. "You can’t even have an open-casket funeral at that point; that’s just incredibly bloody inconsiderate." Uh, I don't think the suicide cares much about their casket at that point; the entire purpose of suicide, as I remember, is to end the pain that has become so large in your life that it dominates all else. Second of all, who cares what s/he looks like. S/He's dead. Let 'im/er go.

Second, I feel like the part about the shotgunner was there as shock-value. Yeah, anybody who gets upset by that kind of stuff--like, apparently, flamingnerd--is going to be upset. But what was the point of telling that story? Anyone who has seen massive trauma like that is just going to say "yeah, that sounds familier." You're not going to convince anyone contemplating suicide that their life is worth living, or that the consequences of messing up are too severe.

Perhaps I'm just missing the point, and you can enlighten me.

I see suicide as #1, another point for Darwin, and #2, self-correcting. The point of the first paragraph wasn't berating him for committing suicide, it was pointing up the problems with the method, and the thing about the open-casket funeral was at least partly facetious. The point of the shotgunner story was #1, I like it, I think it's a good story, and #2, another example of how to screw up - so if you're gonna do it, make sure you get it right.

You've seen my rants about how much I hate people, and about having too bloody many people. I'm not gonna try to convince someone not to kill themself. That's their problem, not mine.

Alright. I think the problem was, as so often occurs, I was incapable of judging your intent on the 'Net. Please accept my apologies, as I was the one who was in the wrong.
