A Moment

Today I had the strangest moment at the most unusual time. It was a day of relaxation here. We literally did nothing, lounging around and watching TV all day, idly surfing the net, munching a snack or two, recovering from many days of exhilarating work at the shop (and for baltimoregretch, putting out fires at the office). Late in the afternoon, with some leftover chicken parts on the grill, I walked out into the garage and opened the wine cellar.

As I idly reached for a bottle of Bordeaux from the rather spectacular 2000 vintage, I was struck (and I mean struck, not just a fleeting thought) by this incredible humility, as if I were dwarfed by the magnificence of the collection of grape squeezings in front of me, and much, much more. Here I was, a man of rather humble beginnings, selecting a somewhat expensive bottle of wine as if it were no more than a bag of chips from a gas station vending machine. Instead of feeling some sort of displaced pride, of some kind of achievement, of some sort of how-cool-am-I arrogance, I felt suddenly, and quite unusually (and you here, most of whom are the ones that know me best, understand how unusual that is), rather small. All in the face of a bottle of wine.

elflad was right. I lead the most incredibly charmed life. Ever.
