Well, Popcorn, my freshman year roommate and I are all supposed to be climbing Moosilauke tomorrow. I made plans to get crampons and snowshoes from Dartmouth Outdoor Rentals so that we'd be prepared if the mountain was especially snowy, especially icy, or both. Given that it's in the forties and raining down here in Hanover, I'm banking on the latter. All fine and dandy, until I get to DOR and discover that they apparently are incapable of keeping enough crampons in stock--the cabin-hopping trip has checked all of them out! I suppose we'll have to use trekking poles, which won't be anywhere near as good, but will be something at least. Oh, and they only have five poles, and they're all of different types. Well, fuck you very much DOR.
This hasn't been the first issue I've had with DOR, and it probably won't be the last. If it weren't for the fact that I don't have the money, and might not be using winter equipment for years after I graduate, I would just buy the goddamn stuff myself.
Anyway, AFAIK, we're still go for tomorrow. If I haven't posted here by late tomorrow night, or you haven't seen me by then, I'm probably already dead. Okay, in all seriousness if you haven't heard from me, try calling me and make sure I'm alright. Our projected route: park at the start of the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge Rd, walk in on the road to the Lodge, hike up the Gorge Brook Trail to the summit. Depending on conditions, either return the way we came or hook a left and take the Carriage Rd, bag South Moosilauke, left again on the Snapper Trail (or if we miss it, the Hurricane Trail) and return to the lodge, and back to the car. We're presumably getting an early start, so wish us luck!
