In the orthodox Christmas eve dinner tradition a tray of crackers topped with a dab of honey and a garlic clove or two is passed around and each dinner guest takes and eats one. It is to remind us that life is both bitter and sweet.
I am reminded of that as today we take our daughter to the airport to return to her home in San Francisco. It is such a joy to have her home but in the back of my mind is always the knowledge that we will have to say goodbye again. Oh yeah-honey for two weeks and garlic today.
