Ride 60: Boy, is it HOT!

Sep 02, 2011 20:45

Short ride today, because riding tonight was like getting a bath from a dog's tongue, except a dog's tongue feels cooler.

It was above ninety, with high humidity.  So high, that I was actively astonished when the fallen leaves on the bike path underneath actually crackled as I rode over them.

My friend the sleepy alley cat was seated like a meatloaf in the middle of the alley.  I rode past the house with the dogs and the sneering guy, but they weren't out.  His neighbor waved at me, and I waved back.

Fall is starting to come to our part of the world.  I wish I could say it was pretty, but right now, trees have leaves turning a dull brown on the tree, and then dropping.  No yellows, oranges or reds.  (I read vixy's journal about purple leaves with jealousy.)

Flying all about were dozens of dragonflies, glittering blue and green and gold in the setting sun.  No matter where I looked, they were everywhere.  As I rode, I collected little green flying bugs against my shirt.  They tickled on my arms, and I kept having to brush them off my face.  I know what dragonfly dinner was.

It was so beastly hot, I barely made it to the first road, even just riding myself on the yellow bike.  Heat shimmered up the path so high, I wasn't certain if the bike riders coming toward me out of the golden west were actual people or shimmering mirages.  I guess it was up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit today (37.2 Celsius) and the blacktop absorbs a lot of heat.  Maybe I'm not surprised about crunchy leaves after all.

I drank nearly all my water, which had been super cold with added ice at my start, and was now lukewarm on my tongue at the turnaround.  My throat was dry.  My throat was the only thing about me that was dry!

Once I got home, I plopped down with my neighbors and petted their dogs while I got my legs back.  This ride was hard to do!

bike, me, health
