Guess I’d better get this thing started. I’m Jeff. If you’ve read my bio then you already know a few things about me. I’ll add a few things now:
-I’m single…actually I’m getting divorced. A couple months ago I was totally devastated when my ex left me. While I’m not totally over it, I am starting to accept and embrace this change. I miss her company, but I now have a sense of freedom that feels…very good. I can do whatever I want to do, move in any direction with my life. I like it, a lot.
-I do research in molecular biology. Right now I’m picking apart a gene in a little weed called Arabidopsis, seeing what makes it tick. Graduate school has taught me a lot over the last 2 years, and I now think of myself as a research biologist.
-I’m finishing up my degree. In fact my professor told me just a couple hours ago that I need to make sure all the deadlines are met and to start wrapping up my thesis. BOOYAH. It’s gonna feel so great to graduate.
-Since I’m finishing up my degree, I’m in the process of figuring out what I want to do next. I’m thinking PhD in a lab doing research into some aspect of human longevity, though I haven’t decided exactly what direction I want to go with this yet. If you are aware of any good opportunities let me know!

So….enough of that.

I got SO DRUNK last night. I think I had maybe 11 beers. On a Monday night. It was worth it, and since everyone else online was drunk I felt right at home. If you were there but sober…well, sorry but that’s really your own dumbass fault!
I think I’m going to switch to a beer diet. Multi-vitamin in the morning, beer in the evening…maybe some fruit in between to balance things out. I did actually loose weight last night, but I bet it was all water hehe. BTW, I have lost 22 of my 40 lb weight lose goal in just under a month and a half. Hopefully by the end of May I’ll be my old pimp self again.
I had a breakthrough in my research last week. One of the tests I’ve been running identified a protein that may be responsible from regulating expression of my gene. At the worst this means is I can graduate with some semi-positive data. At best it means I may have made the very significant contribution to understanding gene regulation in plants, leading to a publication with my name on it. We shall see.
I help teach a class in plant molecular biology. On Friday my students took their second exam. On Thursday night I held a review session for them. They were scared and stressed out. I tried to help them but it was clear that many needed more than an hour-long tutoring session to catch up. Some of them are catching on to what’s being taught, but most are not. Standard lecture format for teaching undergraduate classes is the biggest waste of time. It’s nothing but pure laziness on the teacher’s part. The students need to be engaged, split up into groups of four or five and given problems to solve. The teacher needs to know every student’s name, and regularly engage the students who are slacking off. Otherwise no one learns anything but the students who would have gotten good grades anyway. This lecture crap is just retarded. I wish my professor could see it!
Just finished Ender’s Game. What a great book! I will be recommending it to anyone interested in sci-fi in general or command structure psychology in particular. I can’t wait to get started on Speaker of the Dead.
I guess I’ll go grade these tests now…
