I've been busy/sick lately so I haven't gotten to listen to much, or write about it.
Two discs at the same time, man.
So first was Sometimes by City and Colour. I started to feel sick while I was listening to it and the next few days only got worse, so I didn't get all the way through. It's just straight acoustic guitar and vocals, which is far outside the realm of what I typically listen to. It's something I'd have to be in the mood for. Unfortunately, I wasn't much of a fan. The singer's voice didn't really appeal to me. When a band has other instruments to make up for the singer's voice (i.e. Pearl Jam), I can get used to it, but since it's just grandpa's guitars (
acoustics are for pussies and grandpas), it's more difficult. I'll download the other album after this experiment is over.
The other album I've listened to in the last couple days is Plans by Death Cab for Cutie. This is also pretty far outside the realm of what I usually listen to, but I had a more positive reaction to this. It's chilled out, happy music, and it's not overly complicated. If there's one thing I've learned so far from this, it's that complicated music isn't always better music. It's great to have my mind blown by the likes of God Forbid, Opeth, Protest the Hero, and so on, but good music transcends talent. The Ramones were popular, for fucksake.
Later on tonight, I'll be pushing to catch up with California by Mr. Bungle.
