"Max, have you ever thought of getting a tattoo?"

Max looked up, wrinkling his brow in thought. He'd never really considered it, but a tattoo sounded like something it might be worthwhile to have. A tattoo of a heart, he thought immediately, with his and Jude's initial in it.

No, that wasn't what he wanted. Though he did want to have his boyfriend's name inked on his body if he decided to actually get a tattoo -- something that would commemorate how he felt about his lover, that would be a part of him forever.

Of course, Jude himself was going to be a part of his life forever, Max told himself firmly as he smiled over at his boyfriend. Jude was lounging on the couch, holding up a magazine for Max to see, opened to an article on tattooing.

"I'd never really thought about it seriously before, but a tattoo could be cool," he answered as he stood up and stretched. "Any particular reason?"

Jude shook his head, smiling up at Max from where he was reclining on the couch cushions. "No, not at all. I just saw this article and thought it would be cool to get a tattoo. I don't think I'd be too good at it, though. I hate needles."

Max shrugged, filing that information away in his mind. "They don't really bother me. Even when I was a little kid, I didn't mind getting shots like all my friends did. It just hurts for a second, anyway. Needles aren't all that bad."

Jude shook his head, shuddering. "I hate them. I always feel like they're going to .... I don't know, invade me somehow."

Max couldn't help but smile at the words; he sat down on the couch as Jude sat up, letting the other young man lay back down and rest his head in Max's lap. "Invade? Isn't that what I do every time we make love?" he teased, running a hand through Jude's hair.

He looked down at Jude as his boyfriend laughed up at him, looking a little rueful. "All right, you've got me there," he admitted as Max took the magazine from his hands. "I guess invasion of some kinds isn't all that bad. But ...."

"But what?" Max asked, lowering the magazine to look at Jude again. His boyfriend actually looked worried, his lower lip caught between his teeth.

"It would hurt a lot more to get a tattoo than just getting a shot at the doctor's office," Jude explained, his hands gesturing in the empty air as he usually did when he was talking about something that he couldn't quite find words for. "The needle is in contact with your skin a lot longer."

"You don't have to get a tattoo if you don't want one, baby," Max assured him, stroking Jude's hair. "I think I might like to have one, though. What do you say to getting our names tattooed in a heart? Or is that too cheesy?"

Jude shook his head, a smile on his lips. "No, I think it's romantic. As long as the heart doesn't have an arrow through it or anything like that. I want it to be a testament to us, to the power of the two of us together. If that's okay with you."

"I'd be getting it for you, so whatever you want is fine with me," Max told him, laughing. "So would a heart with our initials suit you?"

"But it's on your body," Jude protested, frowning as he sat up. "I don't want you to get a tattoo just to please me, Max! If you get one, I want it to be something we'll both agree on." He looked over at his boyfriend, a worried expression in his dark eyes.

"Calm down, baby." Max reached out to take Jude's hand in his, entwining their fingers together and squeezing his lover's hand reassuringly. "I'm not going to just rush out and get a tattoo. We can talk about it and decide what we both want."

Jude nodded, looking relieved. "It's not like I wanted you to just run out and get it now," he murmured, a blush creeping over his cheeks. "I just saw that article and started thinking that a tattoo would look really good on you."

"And I think one would look good on you," Max told him. "But if you have a phobia about the needle, it's probably not a good idea."

"You think a tattoo would look good on me?" Jude looked surprised, glancing down at his body as though he could see his pale flesh through his clothes. "I don't know, Max. A tattoo wouldn't suit me the way it would you."

"I think ink would look fantastic on you," Max said softly, leaning over to brush a kiss against Jude's cheek. "But I've got to admit, I think anything looks great on you, babe. You're the most gorgeous man I've ever laid eyes on."

Jude's blush intensified at Max's words; he looked down at their entwined hands, taking a breath before he spoke. "I might get one, if you really want me to."

"In spite of how scared you are of the tattoo needle?" Max blinked, surprised at his boyfriend's words. "You'd do that for me? Conquer your fears?" That was a big thing for Jude, and he knew it. Max was rendered speechless for a few moments -- a rarity for him.

"Yes, I would," Jude replied, looking up at him, his dark eyes soft and luminous.

Max had seen that look on Jude's face before. It was a look that spoke of all the love in his heart, a look that was for Max alone. He swallowed hard before he leaned forward to kiss Jude again, wrapping his arms around his lover and pulling him close.

"That means a lot to me, baby," he whispered, his voice husky. "I think we should make plans to get those tattoos pretty soon, don't you? And maybe we should have them matching. Or you could get my name, and I could get yours."

"That sounds like a perfect idea to me," Jude told him, closing his eyes and resting his head against Max's shoulder. "I want to have your name tattooed on me. Not that I need some seal of ownership. I've always been yours, Max, and I always will be."

"And I'm yours .... for the rest of our lives," Max replied, grinning as his hands began to explore Jude's body. "I think I need to figure out just where that tattoo should be ...."

"We could do that better in the bedroom, couldn't we?" Jude asked, his eyes dancing.

"You know, I think you might be right about that." Max stood up, tugging Jude's hand and pulling his boyfriend to his feet, then wrapping his arms around Jude's waist and kissing him again. It was several long moments before they broke away from the kiss, each of them panting for breath.

"I think we need to thoroughly check out all the places we could get tattoos, to find the perfect place for them," Max whispered into Jude's ear, his voice hoarse with desire.

"I couldn't agree more," Jude told him, his own voice breathless and whispery. With that thought in mind, he moved towards the bedroom, Max following right behind him.
