Looking Glass

We use it every day, and probably don't realize how much it affects our lives. It tells us a lot of things. It tells us if we fit in. It helps us make decisions. It influences our mood more than PMS. Yes, it's the mirror, "a surface capable of reflecting sufficient undiffused light to form an image of an object placed in front of it. Also called looking glass" (www.dictionary.com). It is probably the best invention ever. It's everywhere. The mirror allows us to see ourselves through someone else's perspective.

Everyone does their last image-check with the mirror before they head out. Is my hair ok? Do my clothes match? Or should I pick out something else instead? Uh oh! The mirror keeps us from leaving the house. We always have to make sure that we're flawless before flaunting ourselves in public. Maybe that explains why some of us, vain souls out there, are never punctual.

Unfortunately, the mirror can be unfaithful to us sometimes. Have you ever been critisized about your image even after having that "image-check" before you left your place? You thought you looked fine. Gone shopping: New pants, new shoes, a new style. But when you saw your friends, they asked you: Do you have a mirror at home?

Sounds discouraging huh? So why do we even look at ourselves through the mirror, if our own perspective of ourselves doesn't count?
