I cried the day Bush won reelection.
well...almost...but it was close enough. I'm sure when John Kerry comes out to speak at 11 am our time, I'm going to, but fortunately and unfortunately, I'll be stuck in class.
I've been learning a little bit about Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments, and how sympathy works to form our judgements. I can't help but feel sympathy for Kerry, for having worked so hard in the longest presidential campaign ever, and finally coming down to a handful of hundred thousand votes. It's fate, or something. I guess that's the only way to be able to live with it after it's all said and done.
As for the future of this country, who knows. It won't be, as one of my floor mates put it, "the death of America," but it does put a few issues into perspective. John Kerry told Bush in his concession phone call that something has to be done about this disunified country. I think the biggest thing that we can learn right now, is to internalize respect in all and every way--be able to be like the runner up and admit defeat, but never losing sight of what core principles are. And holding on to principles doesn't mean an inflexibility to change; quite the opposite, we realize that issues may change, circumstances will change...we can learn to even change some of our ways of thinking, but ultimately, what we stand for what we love and what we sometimes take for granted: our freedom to make something of ourselves that we can be truly proud of.
May Americans learn to open their eyes to a changing world.
