So, I haven't updated in awhile. I think the last one was from when I climbed the South Teton. Unfortunately, not much has happened since then lol. This past weekend (24-26) was kind of a let down for me. I was originally going to spend Monday to climbing Teewinot, which is a pretty tough peak that continues to elude me. Late Sunday night I decided to go mountain biking at Jackson Hole instead (mistake). I got out there around Noon or so on Monday, bought a lift ticket ($10) and went riding only to find that the lift they had in service only went 400 feet or so up the mountain. What? This mountain has over 4,000 vertical and they give us bikers 400 feet? Lame. On top of that there were only a handful of trails to ride, none of which went very far (how much can you stretch 400 feet, you know?) and there was one tiny little terrain/stunt park which even I could ride easily in under a minute. It was definitely a let down. I had the helmet cam for the day so I was hoping to be able to practice on a few harder jumps/drops and other such things, but no such luck. The terrain park had 3-4 little doubles that were small enough to basically be tabletops, plus a few wooden ladders/bridges and some bermed turns. That's about it. Kind of a let down, huh?
I did, however, find info on some awesome trails built way up on Teton Pass by the "Teton Freedom Riders" and sponsered by www.tetongravity.com (of which I just became a faithful member lol). These trails are supposedly pretty hardcore, however; with names like "Lithium" and "Jimmy's Mom" and with awesome jumps, step ups, and the like. Obviously, in the middle of Teton Pass, there are no lifts so you either have to shuttle, ride back up or hitchhike to get back to your car. I'm considering checking it out later if the weather clears this weekend or maybe one of the upcoming weekends. It's kind of funny to think of Your Mom riding Jimmy's Mom. Check out the link for Jimmy's Mom (I want one of those tshirts)
http://www.bikemag.com/btrails/north-america/rocky-mountains/wyoming/teton/jimmys-mom.html The rest of last weekend was pretty boring. Not much to report.
The work week was alright, however. It went rather fast, which I am fond of. Grouse tracking Wed and Fri breaks up the monotony of the snowshoe hare cover project on Thur and Sat. We got out by 2 pm on Friday, which was awesome. Aside from that, the best part of the workweek last week was what I found in my cabin on Friday afternoon...
So, like I said, I got out at like 2 on Friday. I was chilling at the cabin watching a scary movie that I rented, 30 Days of Night. It's about this small alaskan town which is ransacked by these creepy animalistic vampires during their month-long period of arctic darkness lol. Anyways, the movie was actually pretty good; better than most "horror" movies that come out these days. It was tense and kept me on the edge a little bit. But, back to the story at hand; I was sitting there watching this movie, alone in the cabin around 9 pm or so. It was nice and quiet with the exception of my movie and, all of the sudden, this knocking/rustling sound in the kitchen. Now, I had done the dishes before I started the movie and I cleaned out this frying pan with scrambled egg stuck on it. I threw the old pieces of egg outside the back door into the grass since I didn't wanna dump water/egg into the garbage can. Recalling this, as well as the fact that my unlocked screen door opens into the cabin, I start thinking "bear" (it was a really loud noise!). So, I get up and look into the kitchen. I see no bear (whew) but I do see something brown and large (about the size of a small rabbit) jump out of the garbage can and run behind the stove. I go and look behind the stove to see a very large kangaroo rat looking back at me lol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_rat He was making some weird clucking noise and looking at me from a few feet away behind the stove. My heart swelled with his cuteness and so I walked away and watched to see if he'd come out. He did and looked around a little bit before he saw me and scampered back behind the stove. Seeing this as an opportunity I couldn't miss out on, I quickly removed the hook from my fishing pole's line, tied an old piece of bread on and "cast" it a few feet away from the trash can. I quickly set up my video camera, popped open a Yuengling and waited. He came out, saw the bread and started nibbling on it. I'd pull it in a little bit. He'd chase it. I'd reel in some more. He'd chase it some more. This went on and on for about 5 minutes before he finally saw me and ran under the fridge. It was fun while it lasted though.
Well, that was the most exciting part of my week lol. Not much else to talk about. This weekend is supposed to be rainy and cold, which is a bummer. It is supposed to snow in the mountains too. If it's not too bad here in the valley, I might make the hike up into the mountains to see some snow. I don't wanna have to hike through rain to get to it though. I have rain gear, but it's just not much fun lol. We'll see how it goes, I might just end up renting a bunch of redbox movies and sitting in the cabin all weekend. Sigh.
That's all for now, peace out.
