"So, what's with the tuxedo? I thought you only wore dresses?" I said as I looked at a certain framed picture. I was once again, at a certain pet shop somewhere in Chinatown.
"Funny. That's my grandfather." Hime told me a.k.a. Ueda Tatsuya. We've known each other for several months now. And I was used to calling him Hime (only in my mind though) because he really looked like a princess, but I often slipped.
"Grandfather?" My brows arched as I munched onto something. 'Damn. The resemblance is freaky!'
"Check on the lower right corner, it should have the date and location the photo was taken."
Berlin, 1939. It was what I saw on the picture.
"So, the old man was an important guy?"
"After the war, he came to the U.S. and opened a pet store." He answered as he served me with tea.
I sat comfortably on the couch. "Pet store, eh? Hey, don't you have anything that's not sweet? Just looking at this stuff would cause me diabetes." I complained.
"Midget----err----Detective, in case you've forgotten, this is not a buffet?" He glared at me; I saw veins popping out on his forehead.
"Heh... ya know how it is. I've been so busy lately, plus there's nothing at my place. And hotel food is so damned expensive."
Munch. Munch. Munch.
"Hotel?"
"Have you ever been to Eclavu? It's a small island off the China Sea."
"Yes, a small country with a proper lineage of kings..." Tatsuya answered. "They also have some of the world's finest diamond mines."
"Last year, their emperor, Yamashita Tomohisa, died of old age. But that old son of a bitch was gettin' some on the side from at least thirty years his junior." I informed him.
"But the king still looked like he was still in his late twenties, right?"
"Damn right. But after he died, she comes out and announces that she's pregnant. Seeing how His Highness left no legitimate children behind, if that little bastard's born, he's the legal heir of Eclavu... and one rich little boy. You can bet your pretty ass the folks who were next in line or the crown won't be too happy."
"Considering all these things, no wonder the girl would choose to bolt. She claimed political asylum here to have enough time to have her baby. And guess whose department gets to play babysitter? We're watching her round the clock. You have no idea how many officers we've got assigned to it." (Me: Watta long explanation, ne?)
"Sou ka..." He sighed.
'Ehhh? After my long explanation, that's all he can say?' I asked myself.
"Is there a proof that her child's really the king's son?" Now, he looked interested.
"That's the best part! Before the king passed away, he had a sample of his sperm preserved. The mistress used it to artificially inseminate herself. The brat's clever! And hear this, the girl's only three months pregnant but the king died nearly a year ago!"
"And the queen, oh hime, you'd better believe she's pissed. But at the same time, they want to stay true to the bloodline."
"Foolish." He smiled at me. "I can't believe how people can be so foolish."
"Yeah, I envy you sometimes, running a pet store."
"Yes, and speaking of that, I must get back to work." He showed me the raccoon that he was holding. "My raccoon has had diarrhea all week... I wonder if it's stress..."
"Eeeeww! C'mon, hime! I'm eating here! You're gross!"
