Just read an entry from the windows vista blog talking about the number of device drivers that will be shipping on the Vista DVD. Apparently space isn't an issue, as they have over 19,000 drivers on the DVD!!!
My question is, why don't they ship the product with enough drivers to guarantee the user can get up and running and on the internet...and then let them use either driver discs they got from the manufacturer or use windows update or the manufacturers website in order to get the latest drivers for the specific devices?
Yes, it does put more work on the user. However, it REALLY cuts down on the bloatware and makes for a more streamlined product when everything is said and done.
Just because storage restraints are not what they used to be doesn't mean that media minded people aren't going to be annoyed by the lack of space created by 19,000+ surplus drivers cluttering up their system!
Or maybe I am wrong...maybe it does take 19,000+ drivers to guarantee everyone can get on the internet and update their machines. Maybe I am foolish for thinking a set of basic drivers should be able to get everyone on the internet and the people/manufacturers who don't/won't conform to those basic drivers...should go out of business. That is not to say that there shouldn't be advanced drivers available. That is just to say that the user will have a functioning PC based on those basic drivers...and once online, the advanced drivers can be downloaded and the user experience upgraded to what it really should be! Is that too much to ask for?? I think it is great that Microsoft has found 19,000+ drivers...I just don't think they should all ship on every single DVD!
What do you think??
I'm out!
