11 reasons to play Fallout 3...

Oct 11, 2009 01:31

I've been playing this game SO MUCH lately - I've finished it a couple of times before, but when I reformatted my computer I lost my old save game and hadn't really tinkered with Fallout 3 again since then... until now lol! I'm amazed how fun it is even starting from scratch and redoing a lot of content. Because I'm a scarily enormous geek for the heck of it, I put together a few screenshots explaining why I love it sooo...

1. Endless fun with character creation

This is Holly, my new Fallout toon. She is slightly wall-eyed and has apparently been eating red icy poles, or possibly blood. Considering she lives in a post apocalyptic wasteland and all, one of those may be slightly more likely than the other. Oh and that's her natural colour :D woo for full colour spectrum for hair! :D

Kickin' ass and taking names. I am way too cool for helmets, but apparently just uncool enough for Erckle glasses. I friggin love those things XD

2. Your Dad is played by Liam Neeson

HI LIAM NEESON DAD!!

For once any resemblance to real people is NOT purely coincidental - they apparently based the character on him as well as having him do the voice acting. They also fully appropriated Qui-Gon Jinn facial hair.

3. Enemies, you are now entering warm liquid goo phase...

Plasma weapon criticals turn people into what looks like partially-baked, radioactive snot. And laser weapon crits turn them into little smoldering piles of ash :D! Your enemies blowing up in a shower of colourful animation? Points in my book!

4. ZOMBEH INVASIONNN...

Okay well not really. These guys are friendly to you. But there ARE evil demonic LUNGE-AT-YOU-MOUTH-AGAPE versions of the so-called 'Ghouls' (peeps who have been lethally irradiated but for whatever reason haven't died). So you get a touch of Left 4 Dead in with your post-apocalyptic adventure RPG.

5. Classic Bethesda-style Gender Neutral Armor

Something I've always loved about Bethesda games is their staunch resistance of skimpy chain mail bikinis and leather g-strings for women who are supposedly wearing full armour. This happens to be a dude, cause it's my ghoul 'manservant' follower, but the graphic for the chicks for this armour is exactly the same. I have friends who've gone so far as to install mods to feminise armour for women in other Bethesda games, but I love the gender neutralness. It looks way more realistic - the last thing a chick would be worrying about when she's heading into a minefield populated by mutants is whether her chestpiece has molded breasts and a 22 inch waistline.

6. Hoarding

Bethesda games are always a good way to let my inner pack rat out to play without cluttering my real house. And hey - what hard working adventurer doesn't want a room carpeted in money to relax in? :3

9. Easter Eggs!

I love all the random unrelated backstories, pointless mini side quests and plain random cool shit that Bethesda crams into their games. It's the main reason I can spend so much time playing them, because even if you run out of actual quest stuff to do you can always... explore all the extra vaults on the map, or try to gather every single named weapon, or work on discovering all game locations.

Efficient use of programming time? No. AWESOME? Oh yes.

My collection of random Abraham Lincoln artefacts scavenged from the Museum of History. I sold his diary, and the recording of his voice is off camera, but there's a collection of Lincoln pennies, a John Wilkes Booth wanted poster, one of his hats, an 'Action Abe' figurine, and 'Lincoln's Repeater' gun.

8. Interior Decorating

With all the random novelty stuff and 'just for the heck of it' mini stories crammed into this game, you can waste a lot of time gathering and displaying rare and interesting items along the way. Here's Holly's living room shelves, and one angle of her bedroom. The red thing on the bed is 'sexy sleepwear' ;D

10. Radioactive Cola? Mmmm-mmm!

I love the concept for these XD
Nuka-cola Quantum, which has a mild radioactive isotope on the ingredients list which makes them glow blue. They're pretty rare in the game - there are only three places where you find more than 1 at a time, and about 90 or so total in the whole map. I love them. I only wish they were a little brighter - so I could light my house with them.

11. Comedy Physics Engine

Even if you're not much of a one for FPS' and gore, and I'm really really not, the way the physics works in game always adds a generous helping of levity to any combat situation. It's realistic enough that when whacked shit happens (fairly regularly) it's comedy gold.

I found this LOLARIOUS video demonstrating some of the fun you can have with explosions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwVDgTxr7fM
Don't worry, the guy he's blasting around is totes evil.

Plus, there's no way to screenshot this one, but the soundtrack is rocking - lots of 40s and 50s music, things like A Wonderful Guy and Easy Living. I never get sick of listening to the game music, which is saying a lot since it's normally the first thing I turn off.

The Game of the Year edition is coming out on October 13th, which includes all the add on packs. I don't have any of them, just the vanilla game, so I am SO getting it. I believe it's $60US in the states, not sure what it will be out here. NO MATTER. Even if it's $100AU that would still be super decent, considering its the regular game + I think 6 expansion packs? If you're looking for something to play and haven't tried Fallout 3 yet, DO CONSIDER IT :D

nerdgasm, geekery, omg, fallout 3
