Plebe Summer Recap - somewhat

Aug 16, 2006 12:29

Well everyone, Plebe summer is pretty much over. We have only a few more days till the academic year starts, but seeing as how we have our cell phones and computer, I really don't see how much worse things could get haha. Anyway.. the summer wasn't too bad to be honest, the hardest part I thought was waking up at 5:45 am almost every single day.. beyond that I just really got annoyed with having to memorize sooo much stuff, some of which I never saw a point in. Oh well, I can't complain seeing as how I've wanted to come here for so many years now and now that I'm here, it seems a little surreal.

So yeah, I'm sure you all want to know a little about the summer. Well I'll try and give as good of a description as possible (I have about 25 minutes till watch..) I remember everything pretty well surprisingly even though it went by extremely fast. The flight here was alright, except I got delayed for three hours... (before boarding, on board, and in flight delays..) Anyway, I-Day or Induction Day, went pretty well, I was a little nervous at first, but that quickly settled down as I realized everyone was just as confused as I was in everything we were doing. My squad-mates and I meshed very quickly, which was key to succeeding over the summer. It seemed weird to think about it at the time, but on that day I never thought the summer would end, especially after saying goodbye to my parents after our Oath of Office Ceremony in the late afternoon.
Fortunately, the summer did go fast, we did a lot of cool things, but also a lot of retarded things. Most of our free time was spent doing rack races or uniform races. I can now claim to fame that I can make three bed in under two minutes and forty seconds and change into any uniform in about four minutes (what a wonderful way of spending all those tax payers money huh?) Haha, anyway, we didn't allllways do that, even though it seemed like we did.. We had a lot of briefs on things deemed "important" for us to learn like basic seamanship knowledge, how to use our computers, even how to stay clean!! Thankfully those dwindled out by the end of the summer.
Some of the cool things we got to do usually involved us leaving the yard or missing something we all didn't like (races in particular.) One of the big things I thought was when we got to go to the shooting range, there we spent most of the day attempting to qualify with a M-16 rifle and M-9 Beretta pistol (both of which I am a qualified sharpshooter). We also hit up the Endurance, Obstacle, and Confidence courses which were always a good time, and midway through the summer got to go to a baseball game in Baltimore (strangely the Mariners were in town and they won!) made a visit to Ft. Mc Henry as well as the Holocaust Museum and the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials. They all were pretty wicked to see and really played a huge role in keeping my spirits up.

In case you didn't know, I am a member of the Lightweight Crew team here. Incredibly, it is going extremely well for me. I am consistantly in the top 8 for everything we do, even with the recruited guys! I am totally stoked because every year, all of Navy's crew teams are consistently in the top 5 of the nation, competing for a National Championship!!! WOOO soooo yeah...

I dunno what else to write, the food's alright here, definitely a lot better then NMMI will ever be. I like most of the people here, some I wouldn't mind pushing down a flight of stairs, but thats another story! Anywho, I have watch soon, so I'm going to go get ready for that, hope to hear from you all soon and that everything is going well on the other side of the country!!!
