I slipped in a few minor details that portend a major shocker and no one's picked up on them.

Okay, I'll give it a shot ... the first shock from Luna's past was that her mother was from a Death Eater family. The second interesting thing was that she was from the class of '45 ... which I *think* was around Tom Riddle's era at Hogwarts.

So I'm going to guess that Caroline was engaged to Tom Riddle, but broke off her engagement when he showed his true colours (given his charisma and acting ability we'll totally allow why she might have thought she was in love with him in the first place).

Anyway, once Caroline discovered the true Tom Riddle she maybe dedicated her life to fighting him. Hence her research into the horcruxes. And Luna's steely determination to assist Harry, who is believed to be the 'Chosen One' to defeat Riddle?

(Thank goodness Luna was born way after 1945; we can toss away any biological connection from her to Voldemort!)

That's my guess anyway. Don't tell me if I've got anything right, I'm happy to find out in the course of your story!

I can neither confirm nor deny your specific theory. All I'll say is that Caroline being a Slytherin and from an old family is important.
