OOC, in case anyone was wondering, is a Roleplayers term, which means Out Of Character.
The server I chat in, frequently, WBS, has a new room open, called The Marauders Map. It's, quite obviously, a Harry Potter RP room. On Sher's suggestion, I made a visit, and found an old friend, Garth. I chatted to him for a bit, and I was made to feel at home by the Host, Lizity.
However, today, Liz asked me when I was going to create a "C", or character, to play in the room. Now, I've been online for about nine years now, and I don't RP. Never have, never will. In my eyes, it's a bit pointless, and some of the people (not all, but some) can be rather...snobbish. It was this reason that led me to abandon a few servers in my time, being "run out" by hardcore RolePlay fanatics.
I told Liz I didn't RP, and she, in a round about way, called me an idiot. When I defended myself, she sent me a PM (private message) stating I had insulted one of her Moderators (a nice enough young woman called Miranda) and demanded I apologise, and either stay and roleplay, or leave "if you're going to be an OOC annoyance".
This was my reply:
An "OOC Annoyance"? Curious choice of words there. I'll certainly apologise to Miranda. However, I'd like an apology from you, for:
A) Calling me an idiot in public a few minutes ago
B) Assuming that all OOC people are somehow "unworthy" of your time.
That's exactly the elitist manner which is the reason I refuse to Role Play. Because I make a choice to not do what you want me to do, I'm somehow second rate, in your eyes?
Life certainly has come a long way. In 1930's and '40s Germany, the Jews were second class, because they chose to live their lives the way they wanted. The 50's and '60s America, people with darker skin were victims of segregation, and all they wanted were equal rights! How about as early as 10-15 years ago, when WOMEN were still being treated, in some corners, as second rate people, just for being born with different chromosomes?
But, hell, this is the 21st century. It's not right to make fun of Jews, black people, or women. Let's shun people who don't want to enjoy the same hobbies as us! Let me tell you something about myself, Liz. I work up to 46 hours a week, for a low pay under a shitty manager, and I get no respect in my job, despite working damned hard and being good at it. So, when I come home, the last thing I want to do is be set upon by some small minded person, who a century or two ago would probably have tried to burned me at the stake for 'witchcraft', or 60 years ago, called me a Commie.
Now. This is your room, and you make the rules. However, if you're going to enforce the rules fairly, you're going to have to kick out ANYONE not engaged in an RP. And, right now, nobody's RPing, are they?
I think it was an intelligent, well framed response to a biased "we hate free thinking" closed mind such as the one I was dealing with. But what reply did I get?
I've been banned from the room until 2007.
Class.
