We've had three full days in New York now. Absolutely exhausted after the 8 hour flight to Hong Kong plus the 15 hour flight to New York. All up we were on the road for more than 30 hours with minimal sleep! The first afternoon was all sleep, then we got up at 9pm (9 in the morning in Perth!) and went out to 34th Street for a pizza. Then more sleep!
Our first morning was spent walking along 5th Avenue up Midtown Manhattan towards Central Park. After many detours along the way, such as to the Rockefeller plaza and Tiffany & Co., we had a great lunch at the food court just South of CP. Luke's Maine Lobster sandwiches are simply amazing! After lunch, more walking through CP, then back down Madison Ave and past the Guggenheim museum towards the Museum of Modern Art for freebie Fridays. We walked back from there to the hotel, stopping by for some Japanese dinner. Unfortunately, we got suckered in by the Fox movies in the hotel and didn't get to sleep until 2am. Thanks very much for running Mask of Zorro followed by Legend of Zorro you bastards!
Day two involved exploring more of Midtown Manhattan. Did a bit of shopping, then took the subway for the first time. Went down to the Grand Central station, then to the Lincoln Centre. We couldn't get seats for anything we wanted though, which didn't surprise us. The New York Philharmonic was booked out that night and Eugene Onegin was sold out for like, forever. We vowed to come back later in the week to try and get last minute tickets for anything else that we could.
Day three: Downtown to Greenwich village and then to Wall Street and the 9/11 Memorial. I really enjoyed the walk through the Village, looking at the parks, cafes and townhouses. Had the obligatory stops at Carrie Bradshaw's "House" and the Friends' apartment, where Su joined with the other tourists in snapping pictures of some poor bugger's houses. I just kept a low profile in embarrassment. Oh well, that's what you get for putting your house on a tv show. I found downtown very impressive. There was just an endless array of skyscrapers. The 911 memorial was landscaped beautifully, and the new Freedom Tower was now so high that we couldn't even see the top through the clouds.
After three days in NYC, we haven't left Manhattan yet and our feet are starting to ache!
