WAZALU is not a word AND Other word associations

Apr 29, 2005 08:40

Because my students only know how to search for sneakers (*thats tennishoes for people not from NY) and basketball scores online, we decided to find something a little more productive for them to do when they "have nothing to do". We all know that there are never any tests to study for or any papers to work on.
A few weeks ago our vice principal came by and asked if we wanted a Scrabble game. Of course we said yes. We had no idea that the kids would take to it like they have. In order to keep other students occupied, we recently aquired a chess board which is equally, if not more, popular. We are just glad to have them doing something else besides hitting each other and looking at the newest "kicks" (slang for sneakers* See above).
Its really amazing how good they are at chess! we have some fierce competition. However, while their vocabulary is good enough for a rousing game of scrabble, we apparently need to work on their word association skills. I was trying to come up with an effective introduction for this, but perhaps it needs none other than 1) my students are male and 2) we are still trying to form their young minds (it's not easy). Below was found written on a piece of paper left in my room, i am assuming as part of an assignment.

Thin

Gaunt
Skinny
Skeletal
Little
Anorexic
Worry
Gaunt
Slim

Man

Male
Guy
Homo Sapien
Gentleman
Sir
Mister
Boy

Woman

Bitch
Slut
Prostitute
Sexy
Miss
Trouble
Sister

And yes, one student did ask if WAZALU was a word. (Gotta use that 10 point Z somehow)
