I'm not exactly sure what that's supposed to mean, but it was printed in bold orange letters on the side of a correctional facility bus going down second ave. today.
I want to compliment paul on his very literary piece on smells in the workplace. The other day we had a teacher who got chicken at a chineese place, and it smelled super good. I have to say, however, that often at the workplace the food of choice is a TV dinner. I really don't understand the plastic food sealed in plastic, flavored with no natural soy preservatives, but waht i really don't understand is how they all seem to smell exactly the same. Not only that, but i really can't think of a much worse smell. I know that i am, in part, bias because both my parents cook, so for those of you who grew up on them, i apologize if i'm offending you. But, nonetheless, they do smell quite terrible.
The week has been great. I taught four classes this week. We read Langston Hughes' poem "A Dream Deferred". After we read and discussed it, the kids wrote a response titled "A Dream Realized". It was a fun excercise and the kids really did a good job with them. Maybe i'll pick out a few and post them for you to read.
Our "company computer guy" has made the promise that we will be getting new computers in my classroom next week (i'll believe it when i see it). But he came by today and asked when is a good time to come by and work on the room. I told him that he could come in anytime before 10:30, but he said that he'd need at least five hours and could he come in the afternoon. Now, please take note that all he is doing is installing five computers and a printer (assuming we get one). I really don't think that could take five hours. Anyway, he wants to come in in the afternoon, as i mentioned, so he wants to know if we can move somewhere else so he can work on the room, because it's just too stressful and he can't work if there are children in the room and he needs the room alllll to himself (and the carnies he hires to help him install things - they're kinda creepy-). I know i was breaking a language barrier (he's a french socialite) but for some reason he can't understand that the main bulk of what i do is run an afterschool center, which of course, conflicts with his time schedule. I told him that, no, i can't move somewhere else, that the kids need a place to go afterschool. I did tell him that, since its the start of the year, that we don't have many kids right now, so if he wants to he can work around the one or two kids we have or wait until 3:30 to work. He walked off.
As i said before, i'll believe it when i see it, but we should have new computers as soon as the carnies and frenchie get over their rich accents, get their act together, and plug five computers into the wall.
