In which Dean lets his brother go.

It was a wendiego that had taken the Winchester brothers into Yellowstone. The moment they had met the park ranger, Murphy, something in Sam recognized her as being more. He didn't know how to explain it, but anytime she was around he took a step back and looked away. His brother had no problems, but he just couldn't make himself look her in the eye unless she spoke directly to him. It freaked him out, and Dean had commented on him being scared of a woman more than a few times this trip.

As they wrapped up the case, Sam went to take a walk while Dean spent some time at the bar. He knew they only had two days before the needed to be back at Bobby's, and already he could feel the beast under him clawing to get out. The heightened senses were easy to get used to, and even came in handy on the hunts. But now three months after his first turning and Sam was still scared about being out during that time. They were no closer to getting any control over the wolf than he was in trying to find Madison a way to make it stop back then.

He knew that eventually he was going to hurt someone. Dean and Bobby couldn't hold him forever and if he hurt one of them...

Sam wrapped his arms around himself and looked up at the sky. First quarter. Something inside him wanted to howl and he just growled to himself and kept walking. If he didn't get some kind of control first, he might just make it easier on everyone and bite the bullet... so to speak.

A wendiego, hunters and a brand new wolf, just what an Alpha needed. Murphy had been shocked when she first encountered to two boys claiming to be FBI investigating the suspicious deaths of some hikers. Yeah, that ruse was old and she could smell hunter on the short one. The tall one, though, smelled like a pup. He had to be very new to his wolf. Her first concern had been the wendiego though. With Kirmani and Morgan she had managed to steer it right into the path of the hunters. Now that it was taken care of she knew they had to do something about the new wolf.

Murphy went alone, since it had been obvious the boy recognized her alpha status. Once he split from his brother and went into the woods, she followed him until they were deep into the woods. Something like this required privacy.

"So," she said, stepping out onto the path. "How long did you think I'd buy that whole FBI bit? You aren't the best liar, kid."

Sam turned, his hand going to the gun on his hip. He hadn't heard her at all, and the hair on the back of his neck rose. "And you aren't just a normal park ranger. So who's the liar?" He tried to look her in the eyes and puff his chest, but he couldn't hold it more than a moment.

She didn't look away when he challenged her. She was alpha here. "No, I'm not, but I am a legitimate park ranger. That's my day job. You're also my job, because I'm not normal. You need to come with me."

"No... I need to get back to my brother." He took a step back, worried. She just admitted she wasn't normal and wanted him to go with her... that wasn't safe and he wasn't crazy.

"If you go back to your brother, you'll kill someone," she said. She wasn't judging him or accusing him. She stated it like a fact. "He can't help you and when you do kill someone, I'll have to come find you again and take you down. If you come live with the pack and we'll get that wolf tamed."

Sam's eyes narrowed and he looked up at her now. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't challenge me." She growled slightly and stepped into his space. He was taller, probably had a hundred pounds on her, but she was confident she could take him if it came down to a fight. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. You've got the scent of wolf all over you, a young wolf too. Stop lying to me, it's not getting you anywhere."

Sam took a step back on instinct and his eyes dropped. He was scared of her and wanted to run. Wanted his brother there to protect him. Somehow she knew exactly what he was and he was pretty sure neither Dean or he had told her. "I'm not a killer," he said softly.

"No, but if you don't get control, you will be." She made her voice more gentle, someone he could trust. "It happens to all new wolves. It hurts, you get scared, the wolf gets scared and a wolf in pain is a desperate thing. You'll kill without knowing and once that starts it's impossible to get control again. I can help you, my pack, we can help you. I promise. You just need to come with me."

Murphy had already talked it over with the rest of the pack. They had agreed to take in a new wolf and help him. She just had to convince him to come with her. She didn't know why he was resisting so much. He obviously didn't want to turn into a rogue. He should want to come with her.

Sam licked his lips and shook his head. He was tempted because suddenly the one thing he had been trying to search for was being presented to him and he just had to say yes. He wanted to see if maybe this was true and he could get control. But Dean... "I can't. My brother... he'll freak out if I disappear on him."

That surprised her. His brother was a hunter. Hunters and wolves did not get along. It was just natural. She considered him, eyes narrowed slightly. "If we go talk to your brother... will he hunt us?"

As much as she wanted to help him, she wasn't going to put her whole pack in danger just for one little wolf. There was more to consider here than just him and his problem.

"If I disappear and not tell him, he will. That's a certainty. But if you think you can help me, and I call him every now and then to let him know I'm ok... he won't. He just wants me to be safe." Sam knew his brother was going to be far from happy about all this. "It'd only be for a few weeks, right? At most?"

She shook her head. "It takes about a year to be fully in control."

A year? Sam rubbed the back of his neck in frustration. "That's going to take a lot of convincing."

She shrugged. "I understand. Family bonds are strong, but he should also care that you're learning control and not killing."

"We're all we have left of our family. He's just trying to protect me. But he doesn't know how to save me from this anymore that I do." Sam took a deep breath. "I want to learn. I need to learn. Just give me some time to talk to him. I've got two days still before the next moon."

Murphy didn't like it, but she nodded. "I'll come find you tomorrow morning. You should work really hard to convince your brother. Control is everything."

She decided to take a risk. Taking a step back, she closed her eyes and concentrated. The transformation took a minute, but where a human had stood earlier, now there was a wolf. She stared at him for a second and then took off into the woods, disappearing in her natural environment.

Sam gasped as she turned into a full wolf. Never had he imagined that he could be able to that. No werewolf that he had ever hunted managed to get into a full wolf transformation. Even when he turned, Dean said it was only into the normal form. But if he could get that much control... he could help his brother a lot on a hunt. He watched her disappear, then he made his way back to the bar he had left his brother in, looking around to find him and hoping he hadn't found a girl yet. Then it would be very awkward.

Dean had but she had just doubled over one of the nearest trashcans, and that had kinda killed the mood. Toss in the designated driver who didn't find him charming or adorable -- he pretty sure she was into chicks which, let's be honest, that was even hotter -- and Dean was out in the cold on his own. It sucked. But there really wasn't much he could do about it. He was heading back towards the bar to see if he could find another girl when he spotted his brother coming in and flagged him down with a grin.

"Hey, Sammy! Decide to come out and have some fun?"

Sam shook his head. "Dean, can we talk?" His hands were shoved deep in his pockets like the world was resting on his shoulders.

Dean watched his brother's face for a moment, before signaling the bartender for two beers, and nodding towards the back of the bar. "There's an empty booth."

Grabbing his beer, Sam followed his brother and sat across from him. He waited a moment before leaning over the booth to keep his voice down. "Listen, you remember that ranger we met? Murphy?"

"Yeah." Dean liked her. Not that he'd admit it, because those women tended not to like him much. He was a pain in the ass and he knew it. "What about her?"

"She... she knows how to help me. I didn't tell her, she just came to me and knew what I was." Sam took a deep breath. "She's like me. But more. And I believe her that she can help me get the control."

Dean paused for a moment, considering with a nod. "That's good. What's the catch?"

"I have to go with them to train. That way I won't be able to hurt anyone while I learn it. And it's going to take awhile."

"How long is a while?"

Sam looked down at his beer. "About a year."

"A year?" Dean shifted slightly, uncomfortably. "And I take it because you're telling me this, I can't come with."

"They're afraid of hunters. I mean, you can't blame them for that, but yeah... I have to go alone." Sam whimpered a bit, the noise having taken on a more canine tone in the last few months. "Maybe it's better. You'll be safer and you won't have to see me go through all this."

"Dude, Sam, I don't care about me being safe. You're my brother. I'm not gonna just leave you alone in the woods with a bunch of wolves we don't know for a year."

"Then what are we going to do, Dean? Keep me locked up every full moon?" Sam took a deep breath to keep his voice down. "I don't know what this training is going to involve anymore than you do. But I'll have my phone and I'll check in. If I need to leave, I'll have you meet me. But this might be the only way. So far it's the closest I've come to finding anyone who can control their demon."

"Sam, I'm not sayin' that I don't want you to find control, alright? I don't want you to hurt anyone any more than you do." And Dean really hoped his brother believed him on that one. "But let's just check her out first. See what the angle is."

"I don't know if she'll take that good. I think she hates you on principle."

Dean took a swig of his beer and rolled his eyes. "I like her already." That was sarcasm, Sammy.

Sam leaned closer. "She changed into a wolf in front of my eyes. Not like how I change, but an actual wolf."

Dean's eyebrows went up a bit. "Damn."

"If she has that much control, Dean... just think of what I can do." There was hope in Sam's eyes, something that had been lacking for a few months now. "No more locking me up, and think of what I could help with on a hunt."

Dean didn't care so much about what Sam was saying but the way he was saying it. He didn't like locking his brother up, but he'd do it if it was necessary to keep Sam from hurting people, and he didn't think Sam needed to help more than he already was: Sam was a damn good hunter. But he'd missed that look on his brother's face, and he wanted to see more of it. "I still wanna meet her."

Sam sighed, but nodded. "I have to meet her tomorrow morning. Keep the guns in the car. In case it's more than her."

"Fine, guns stay in the car," he said, holding up his hands. "I promise. I'm not going to start trouble."

"I know you're not. But trouble tends to follow us like our shadows." Sam chuckled a bit.

"We're Winchester, dude, it's the last name."

Sam sat back and took a drink of his beer. "I'll be safe. I mean, it's Yellowstone park. Hunters would have a hard time finding me there. People like Gordon and his pals... but if you get in trouble and need me, you call and I'll be there. I don't care."

"You got it, Sammy," he nodded. "And the same goes for you. Pack or not."

Sam smirked. "You're always going to be in my pack, Dean." He blinked. "That just sounds weird to say."

Dean snorted. "Way weird. Let's not do that again."

"Guess you never expected to get a puppy out of your brother, huh?"

"Dude, why do you think I kept you around?"

Sam laughed. "Yeah, figures." He lifted his beer up in a salute. "To a better future?"

"Cheers," Dean sighed, clinking his bottle against his brother's before leaning back in the booth again.

The next morning, Sam rearranged his bags so that he was only taking a few of his bare essentials with him. He left his laptop in the trunk, as well as his Ipod and other big possessions. He figured it was better to travel light and what could fit in a single backpack. There was also a gun and his hunting knife in the bag, just for safety. "You take care of my laptop, alright? Don't lock it up with your porn again."

"Dude, relax. Your laptop will be fine," Dean sighed, before leaning back against the trunk of the car. "I only did that once."

"Yeah, I know." Sam looked at the hiking trails for the park. The ranger on duty had shown them a map with directions to Murphy's place. However, they could only go by foot. "You ready?"

"As I'm gonna be," he sighed, pushing away from the car and getting ready to follow his brother. "Let's do this."

Sam led the way, using the map to guide them on the trails. It took about ten minutes, but Sam started to get a feeling in the back of his head that he was being watched. His eyes shifted to look around but he didn't see anyone. However he felt it and he dropped back a bit to tighten up with his brother. "You doing ok?"

Dean raised an eyebrow and started to follow Sam's eyes. "Should I not be?"

"I'm not sure, but I think some of them are watching us."

"Well, that's just great." Dean grit his tightly. "Whada I gotta do, hold up my hands and go 'I come in peace'?"

"It would help," Murphy said, stepping out of the woods. Two wolves, one mostly shades of gray and the other black and brown stepped out with her. "You're a hunter after all."

"He's my brother first," Sam stated. "And he wants to make sure I'm going to be ok."

"If I'm gonna be leaving my brother somewhere without me for a year, I like to get to know the people I'm leaving him with." Dean gave her a bit of a smirk, before doing as he said he would. "So as I said -- I come in peace."

"You know me already, kid. This is Kirmani," she gestured to the gray wolf. "And that's Morgan," she gestured to the black and brown one. "They're members of my pack. Your brother will be safe with us. Don't worry."

She turned a nicer smile on Sam, "You ready to go?"

"Yeah." He turned to look at his brother and gave him a small smile. "I'll call, I promise."

"You better." And he wasn't caring about how girly it looked at the moment, he wasn't going to see his brother for a year. He moved forward, sliding an arm around Sam's shoulders and pulling him close. "Be careful, Sammy."

When she saw neither brother had set a trap she signaled Morgan and Kirmani. They disappeared back into the woods, though she knew they wouldn't go far. It would at least give the two brothers some privacy for their good-byes.

Sam hugged his brother tightly. "You too, Dean. I'm going to get this figured out and be back before you know it."

"Good," Dean nodded, before taking the map from Sam, and flashed an grin back at Murphy. Not quite friendly, but not totally hostile either. "You kids have fun."

"We'll take good care of him." And Murphy meant it. Sam was going to be part of the pack for a year, longer if he wanted, but they took care of their pack.

Sam smiled at his brother, then took a few steps towards Murphy. He was putting a lot of trust in her to help him, but he was running out of choices and now he didn't even have enough time to drive back to Bobby's in time. He waved to his brother, a brave smile on his face.

Dean waved back, before nodding back to Murphy. "You better." And with that, he turned back and headed back towards his car.
