After many years of construction and many billions of dollars, the Big Dig tunnel in Boston is leaking. A lot. This bothers me somewhat because I have been driving through it a lot lately. The engineers keep reassuring us that it isn't dangerous, the tunnel won't collapse, and I guess it won't fill up with water and drown us all. And yet it is a little creepy.
What puzzles me the most is that lots of people knew that some of the walls were unsound, and that they should have stopped during the construction and redone the areas that weren't good. Did they really think they could get away with it? That nobody would ever know?
Now everybody is blaming everybody else. Contractors, supervising engineers, the people who hired the contractors and engineers.... It would be nice if all the people who screwed up were required to cover the cost of repairing it. But I think we taxpayers, and especially we Mass Pike toll payers, will end up paying most of the bill.
On a cheerier note, an Ikea store is being built in Stoughton and should be open by next fall.
