I was reading on article from Zap2It on Tumblr and it got me thinking. The article was in reference to the Sterek Campaign's raising of, I believe, $10,000 for Wolf Haven. It's a great thing and just shows what a fandom can do when it's not busy arguing or sending threatening tweets to show-runners

This got me thinking about my oft told tale of the White Room (I think) Angel convention. It was the weekend that David Boreanaz and James Marsters were also in town for another con and were due to appear on breakfast tv, but didn't turn up. The official thing was that they'd overslept.

To a slasher that was just 'it writes itself' *g*

Anyhoo, I got to the con late - fecking trains - so I hung around at the back of the hall during the opening ceremony. I got chatting to someone in between intros and she mentioned about being disappointed DB and JM misses their tv spot.

I replied with something along the lines of - they probably got carried away with the sex and lost track of time.

You should have seen the look she gave me. A mixture of horror/disgust and pity. That was just before she backed away and found the wall behind her much more worthy of her attention.

It's amazing the difference ten years can make huh?

And also was that 174+ fics or 174k+ WORDS, because if it's words then I WANT ME SOME OF THAT!!!

OMG, that's perfect! Should have spawned 1000 fics. :D

I still remember mentioning that I wrote Backstreet Boys slash at Writer Con. Still don't know if the horror was for the slash, the RPS, or the fact that I actually admitted listening to BSB. *g*

Ooops, guess I did fuck that up, huh? It's 174,000 words. Can't guarantee they are good words as I haven't read them yet, but here you go...

I, too, was writing slash in the 90s (albeit late 90s), and thinks it's both awesome and sad that it's become so mainstream now. Awesome, because I talk to people ~ including 25 year old straight guys at work ~ about pairings, and sad because it's not "ours" anymore. That being said, I think it's pretty cool that what is essentially a slash novel is currently #1 on the USA Today bestseller list, #1 on the B&N Fiction bestseller list, and #5 on the NYT list.

And an m/m novel beat a "mainstream" novel in the last DABWAHA poll.

I've been writing slash since the 80's and the first comment makes me think of my convention going past. The very first convention I went to in the mid nineties all my little slasher buddies were like a little enclave in the corner, and you're right it was like Fight Club, you never even alluded to the fact that you wrote to anyone that wasn't your little clutch of like minded souls.

Yet now you go to a con and even the actors talk about the slash on the net and who they like to be shipped with.
