Ronon Dex

Ok - Here's the beginning of the story that I pulled together from the comment fic I dropped on helenish the other day. I'm dividing it into three parts, because it sort of makes sense with the three posts I did there ( Read more... )

sga, fic, ringeye, sgafic

Do it! Do it! More Snippets! Especially because I am working on putting the second part of the ex-comment-fic together, and it's weirdly, uh, turning out to be from John's point of view. Which was a little unexpected, but has led to some new ideas (and also, has the obvious corollary that the third part will be from Rodney's pov.)

But I felt all shifty about it because Ronon's POV about this stuff is, out of necessity, building the world of the story around itself, and I didn't want to loose any of that ground So the more Ronon POV writing exists in the, uh, Ring-verse, the better - because then the outside POV's will have more to play off of.

Right?

Also - re: masturbation -
I had a bunch of thoughts about this - like that when a Setadan boy gets his first hard-on it's a pretty big deal and there's a party, or, at least, cake for dinner. And/or the first time he has a wet dream, the details of it a written in the Society's book, because it is believed that the Ancestors reveal themselves in such dreams.

Actually - I'm told that part of the logic of masturbating (like it needs logic) for boys is that if they don't do it, they have more wet dreams (controlled release v. natural pressure valve). SO probably Ronon really doesn't masturbate now, because he is working on keeping that second vow. Deliberately avoiding wet dreams would be turning away from the Ancestors - but when he was Running, and filled with anger and misery and self doubt, he sort of defiantly did it all the time - willfully abandoning the Ancestors who had abandoned him.

I also had some thoughts about the origin of the Knot of the Ancestors - but I think I need to figure out a few other things before I nail that down.

Also, hilariously, I found out last night that we (you and I) have a mutual real-life friend. The world is a really small place. Or maybe it's just that people who are concerned about the serious issue of Ronon Dex's heartbreak are just naturally drawn into the same orbits.

You know, I'd be really interested to see you fit Teyla into this, as well. I SORT of assume that she's halfway between the Atlanteans and the Satedans on this issue (sort of Reform Matriarchal Society, I guess) so maybe six generations ago everyone was all "knot of the ancestors" this and "mother" that, but now everyone's calmed down a little, but it's still considered a pretty Great Thing To Do to go out and get involved with a suitable (read: strong or fast or smart, or preferably all three) boy and get pregnant, and women have a lot of status.

So Ronon's behavior doesn't really ping as STRANGE, especially since she doesn't really know what's going on underneath.

OH MY GOD, the TRAGEDY and PAIN. Also, yes. Also, I will not speculate on the shape of that cake. Or, actually, what they probably REALLY do is take you out in the woods someplace and run footraces and beat you with sticks, or some other "Yay! It's fun to be a man!" kind of activity.

I also had some thoughts about the origin of the Knot of the Ancestors - but I think I need to figure out a few other things before I nail that down.

Um, yay, because it's my favorite thing. Also, you know, rape would be a really unspeakably awful crime on Sateda. That is - rape is awful in our culture, but rape on Sateda violates just about every cultural taboo AND is a betrayal of your whole society (who are YOU to decide to spread your DNA around!) and I think The Accused would probably scare the hell out of Ronon, who wouldn't understand why no one believed Jodie Foster. (Also, hey! This is canonically supported by The Tower, when Ronon basically kills those guys who threaten to rape the women.) Anyhow, I think it would be nice for Ronon to have a cultural more (RAPE IS BAAAD) that overlaps with the Atlanteans. Also (and you should do what you're doing with the Knot, because it's worked out so beautifully so far.) it occurs to me that maybe the Knot is some sort of symbol of the non-rapiness of the act. Also, there should be a folk story about it.

HAH. Funnily enough, about five minutes before I read this comment, a friend called me and said "Hey, you know jssangel is friends with Friend G?" --or, okay, what really happened was this:

Friend: Hey, you know your new friend jssangel?
Me: YES! Knot of the ANCESTORS!
Friend: well, I have news about--
Me: Oh, dear god, she's crazy.
Friend: no no no no! NO. She's just good friends with other friend! She lives here!
Me: HAH.

Also, you know what? You need an icon! What you really need is Ronon wearing a t-shirt that says "I heart ring-eyes" or a knot of the ancestors icon, or something with Rodney's eye and the stargate or I don't know, because I'm not much of an icon maker. But people will make them for you, if you ask nicely. It's a barter economy!

ok ok yeah!

I just totally had another idea for a snippet which I think will bring you glee, and weirdly, as I was working on it, I was like "what the hell am I going to do with Teyla?", and I sent her off on an errand. But it is a question, isn't it - what her in-between Atlantis and Sateda POV should be.

I think Reformed Matriarchy is perfect! I also think that Teyla understood very quickly that the people from Atlantis did NOT share or respect the structure of Athosian/Pegasus society, because (Cannon!Support!) as she points out to John, Colonel Sumner didn't treat her the way he should have.

Actually, maybe Teyla never would have agreed to a long term relationship with the Atlanteans if (when they all got there at the end of The Rising) she hadn't discovered that there was a woman in charge after all.

re: Rape and The Knot -
That was actually totally part of what I was thinking. That the knot is there to emphasize the not-rape aspects of, um, Joining.

re: Cannon support -
It is sort of turning out that The Tower is the episode that has it all in terms of support for this fic, isn't it? Not just Ronon's "don't touch her" stance - I mean, the whole plot on John's side of things was that he had been kidnapped for his genes! To make valuable babies!

re: Not!Craziness and Mutual Friends -

What's really brilliant about this is that some people might consider the word "crazy" a perfect description for a total stranger who is thrilled to talk to you about how and why it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to tie the correct kind of knot around the wrists of a fictional character when basically forcing him to have sex against his natural inclinations or romantic desires. But, fortunately, you're not one of those people.
