Young man, I was once in your shoes. I said, I was down and out with the blues. I felt no man cared if I were alive. I felt the whole world was so jive ...
i've always seen your stance on topics related to the dumb shit that followers of the christian belief do, but as i dont know you that well, i gotta ask -
do you dislike/hate/blame the people following the faith, the faith itself, or both?
I personally, am an atheist. I see no evidence of a Judeochristian Big Bearded Santa Claus God any more than I see any evidence of Zeus, Odin, Pan, Shiva, Dream of the Endless or The Flying Spaghetti Monster.
I think a whole hell of a lot of the _teachings_ of Jesus Christ and his little wizards, as presented in various bits of the Bible, are awesome. Of particular note, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." is truly an excellent bit of advice.
Although I'm not adverse to intangible concepts - indeed, "Love" features highly in my book, and it's about as intangible as it gets - "Faith" as a concept kinda bugs me. Because expanded, it means "Have faith that what we tell you." and then continues, and just gets worse "Even if there's no proof that what we want you to believe is true. And even if it doesn't really make sense internally. Or contradicts percieved reality. And is mean and hateful."

i think that's really interesting.
mainly because this sums me my belief system up in a nutshell.
and i agree whole-heartedly with your 3rd paragraph, only i do so from "inside" the christian faith, which is the interesting parallel (if you can call it that) i find between us.
I wonder if there isn't some kind of "faith gene" or something. Talking with religious people it seems that they somehow are able to experience some emotional/psychological states that I am unable to access. I suspect that there may be something in the brain structure or chemistry that causes people to experience that kind of faith.
I'm short on sleep and not expressing myself very well but at any rate religious experience is something I fail to grok.

I still can't believe we're singing this at Christmas in the Park.

Just remember, all of you, a great man once said "No man does it all by himself."
Wise words ... wise words.
