I need not repeat the facts surrounding John Kerry' comment, the response, Kerry's defiant speech Tuesday, and Kerry's beleaguered apology on his website. Everyone is more or less familiar with these facts.
Without making hay of the "Freudian Slip" theory, Kerry's wonderful comments were, more or less, factually correct during the Vietnam War. However, the world has changed. The best man at my wedding attended the US Naval Academy and several friends of mine have entered the armed forces for reasons other than like of alternatives due to poor education. Perhaps there was an intended joke that added a few words. I have two doubts about it. First, John Kerry has been a public figure for decades... I find it hard to believe that he forgot his joke in front of a crowd. Second, Kerry has made a career of accusing Us troops of things... whether it is 1971 and US troops are the modern day equivalent of Gengis Khan or if it is last year on Meet the Press where he claimed US troops are terrorizing Iraq.
In the scheme of things of course it is not a big deal. However, even if I take Kerry at his word that he meant to make a joke that Bush got us stuck in Iraq... it is a harsh joke that is not particularly funny. Our President is stupid and never studied... ha... ha. At least Clinton jokes were sexually related to things he had done or made reference to his general sexually liberal moral character.
The whole thing is much ado about shit we already knew. John Kerry is arrogant and hostile to someone (whether the President or the troops).
