Speaking as a U.S. citizen and voter, I believe the next administration and senate should sign and ratify the treaties to join the International Criminal Court. No one should be above the law, and especially not us.
(
Like that will ever happen. And then... )
I have to agree with jslove on this. It's not a matter of deciding whether or not to approve a farm bill, or dealing with an energy crisis, or even a matter of tax policy. We are talking about deliberate breaking of the law by the top law enforcement official of the country. And we're not talking about perjury, which is what Mr. Clinton was impeached for; we're talking about tortures that are illegal under national and international laws, as well as arguably being the first President I can think of who might have actually broken all ten rules of the Bill of Rights.
While the 1st Amendment is about Congress, I would say that Executive Orders have a similar scope, and there have been several such which have specifically been for or against certain religions as well as against rights of peaceable assembly.
The 2nd Amendment has not been broken by Mr. Bush any worse than any other modern President, but he still doesn't abide by it.
It is arguable that some of the soldiers operating in Iraq actually took shelter in locals homes, including Saddam Hussein's palaces. It's really not easy to break the 3rd Amendment, but he did it.
Fourth Amendment, warrantless wiretapping since February 2001, nineseven sorry, it's late and that can sometimes affect my basic maths months before the putative reason commonly given (9/11/01) - broken.
Fifth Amendment, Guantanamo Bay prisoners and Jose Padilla - broken.
Sixth Amendment, same people - broken.
Seventh Amendment, same people - broken.
Eighth Amendment, various disappeared people and tortures used on them as well as the above people - broken.
Ninth Amendment, ignored by a number of modern Presidents, but none more than Mr. Bush. Broken.
Tenth Amendment is cited by Mr. Bush when he's in favor of what's being decided he hopes in his favor in various states but is completely ignored when he wants a different result, such as Full Faith and Credit vs. Gay Marriage. Many presidents break this one, and Mr. Bush is no exception. Broken.
Mr. Bush has violated his oath of office more egregiously than any other President. Mr. Cheney has done the same. They should be impeached. Barring that, given their explicit admissions of supervision and approval of torture, they should be tried for war crimes.
