So we went fishing today. It was fun--hosted by the company that does the military housing for Fort Carson (whose name escapes me at present). My sister caught three fish: one 16 inches, one 15.5 inches and one barely bigger than my hand. I didn't catch a dang thing but it was fun anyway. Of course, it was also 90 degrees out on the water and I was wearing short sleeves, so I got sunburned. At least I wasn't wearing a tank top, getting burned on the joint of the shoulder hurts like hell. Bad enough that it's over my elbows. Bit of an odd tan, since I was holding my rod most of the time I was out there. You can really see it.
They gave us our own fishing poles and gear and stuff. It's quite cool. Some of it'll even work on salt water fish, so I can go fishing with my Daddy (Mom says he only likes deep water fishing. I say that calls for a road trip to the Keys.)
The bus ride there and back was somewhat hellish--somewhat because I got to read, hellish because it was too fast over very bumpy roads. Ow. And on the way back a rock crashed through one of the windows. Made a damn big hole, too.
After we'd come in from the lake and had lunch we went to the hardware store (to replace the back porch light, which apparently exploded--I would've loved to see that.) We ended up in the garden center, where I came across Butterfly Bushes, Daylilies and Foxglove, and was reminded of my DsM. They had an inordinate amount of tomato starters, too. I'm getting to like tomatoes more and more (though you still wont catch me eating one all by its lonesome.
I've been getting better at cooking, mostly through trial and error. The fun thing about that is that the mistakes are generally edible (unlike that time I really screwed up sugar cookies--don't ask) and usually pretty tasty anyway. However, next time I want to try pork fried rice I'm definitely going to use a recipe because that was just bland on a whole new level of bland. I didn't know food with so little taste could manage to taste so gross. On the plus side, I now know how to make rice on the stove top (I totally covet DsM's rice cooker--I want one just like it. ...Not like Mom's, hers is too big and just damn confusing.) And Mom bought me the stuff to make hot wings (something I've been craving for a while but that no one else in this house would want to eat--granted I could go out and eat them on my own, but eating out isn't as much fun without company) so I'll get to try those next. There's this recipe Dad used for those that turned out really well--I think it involved Tabasco sauce and butter and not much else, so I'll have to find that one and give it a shot (Mom got me Louisiana style wing sauce--which I'm sure is just fine but too much of a short cut--I want to learn how to really cook, though the method I'm using will take longer than most. Hey, it's the journey, not the destination, right?)
I'm going to try to get some sleep--the not-moving, I'm lying on my back because I can't lie on my side kind of sleeping. Ow.
