Thoughts on "The Real L Word"

I think it's Ilene Chaiken's way of thumbing her nose at us and saying "See - the lesbians on my show really did represent LA Lesbians." Not hardly.

First, she put in Jill and Nikki to represent Bette and Tina. They were nice, probably the nicest ones on the show. But it was rather self absorbed of the one to try and insist they both wear wedding dresses. One of them wanted to wear a suit. It's her wedding day too, let her wear what she wants. And it looks like they will have money issues down the line because one "is more financially successful" than the other.

Then we have the one with long braids, tattoos and lots of women. She's supposed to represent Shane??? I don't think so. She's not even close. And it looks like she was dumping one off at the airport and picking up someone else at the airport. That's not a player, that's just disgusting. Imagine how those women feel watching the show. Even if they knew about it before it showed, it must be humiliating to know that (even if the ratings suck) a few million people are watching.

Even though she's not femme, I guess Mikey represents Alice because they sort of look alike. Well, okay they both have similar hairstyles and coloring. At first glance they look alike. There was someone who probably represents Carmen, bringing in the family. There isn't a Jenny, because Ilene Chaiken is Jenny. And they couldn't include a closeted athlete because...well...they're closeted.

None of these women are people I would want to know. Let's start with Mikey who believes no one works as hard as she does. Then there is her girlfriend - or at least I think it was her girlfriend - besides the one with the braids and Mikey who's blond, they all look alike to me. She said something along the lines of "If you look good and have money then you're 'in' as a lesbian in LA." Well, duh...if you're good looking and have money, chances are you're 'in' no matter what city you live in.

Then there was one who said something like "LA lesbians are a different breed than all other lesbians." I think this goes back to reinforce what I said about Ms. Chaiken. (I wouldn't be surprised to find that was 'suggested' as a talking topic) She feels redeemed because she found a bunch of LA lesbians who are like the ones she wrote about in "The L Word."

Okay, and I could appreciate the lovemaking that went on in "The L Word." They were actresses - they were acting. But I felt squicky listening to the two who were making love. It bothers me when they provide 'real' sounds. I'm sorry, but no amount of money in the world would get me to let someone, let alone the entire TV audience, listen to me. And I just don't feel comfortable intruding on what should be a private moment.

Personally I thought the Surfer women that were on Logo a while back were much better. They were mostly likable. Perhaps that's because the TV show was involved with more than just their drama. Their drive to do their best is probably one of the things that made them likable. They seemed more like ordinary people.

The women on the "Real L Word" are just far to self-involved. Will I watch it again? I want to say no, but I probably will. Only because, sometimes you see a train wreck happening and just can't look away.
