Neal circled the target date on the calendar: Tuesday. This Tuesday. As in tomorrow. Despite what the doctors called ‘minor complications,’ Peter was coming home.

This was the longest he’d gone without Peter’s company since they first cut their deal. Even when back in prison he'd seen the man. Hell, the only other time that came close was when Peter had taken Elizabeth on their anniversary vacation.

He hadn’t really missed Peter that time. Well, maybe a little. Even then, he’d known how much he liked working with Peter and teasing Peter and getting annoyed with Peter and forgiving Peter. And even then he’d recognized Peter as just what he needed in an authority figure. Really, he had. He’d known that Peter was firm enough to keep him on track and flexible enough to allow him to think outside the box. That’s why he had risked the ‘exigent circumstances’ ploy.

Still, he’d been relieved when Peter left town. He had a whole week without Peter’s eyes on him-although Peter had probably checked his location every hour while he was away.

It was different now. He wanted Peter here; he wanted to fuss over the man; he wanted to keep the man from getting grouchy and bitchy during his recovery. He wanted to feel the man’s hand on his shoulder or arm or the small of his back, because he missed the innocent-yet-possessive way Peter touched him when they were together. He wanted to pull Peter into his arms until he was almost hugging the life out of him and scold him for getting shot, for scaring Neal that way.

He wanted to remind Peter that he had already lost Kate, the love of his life. He couldn’t afford to lose his father figure-his Dad-too.
