John stepped into Elizabeth's office. "Hey, Elizabeth. You called?" he asked.

"Yes, thanks, John. Look, I need you to do me a favour. I'm warning you now, it's not going to be fun, but I really don't have time to deal with it right now."

"Sure…what's up?" he asked.

"You know how the Academy has that short-term internship program, the one they started up a couple of years ago?" Elizabeth asked. John nodded slowly. "Well, they've decided to offer a placement on Atlantis to their top students.  One has been selected." she paused for a minute. "It's a science student.  Colonel Carter helped select her-apparently she's brilliant. I need you to go tell Rodney that he's going to be a mentor for a week." John's head began a rapid shake before her sentence was complete.

"Oh no. No, no, no. Elizabeth. Please don't make me tell Rodney that he has to show around a teenager for a week."

"John, please. You promised.  I really don't have the time to deal with Rodney right now. I'm swamped. Please?" she looked up at him and, as usual, he was unable to refuse her.

"Fine. Fine. I'll do it. But you know he'll probably come complaining to you anyway, right?" John asked sulkily. Elizabeth sighed even as she smiled at John's petulant expression.

"Oh, I don't doubt it." her voice was resigned as John turned and walked out of her office.

John sighed. "Rodney. This isn't a choice."  Rodney shook his head.

"Nope. Won't do it. You can't make me. I don't do kids, John, you know that!"

"Look, Rodney, I didn't make the arrangement. Elizabeth did. I'm just the messenger. Honestly, I feel bad for the kid. I hope she's got a thick skin!" he turned to leave the lab.

"Oh, god, it's a girl, too? Ugh, this keeps getting better."

"Hmm, don't let Colonel Carter hear you say that!' John said cheerfully as he left.

"A student." Rodney grumbled as he stomped around the lab, Zelenka ducking quickly out of his way. "Me, mentoring some stupid kid. She won't even understand me."

"Maybe it won't be so bad, Rodney. I heard Colonel Carter selected the student herself. I'm sure she would only choose someone capable." Rodney glared.

"Zelenka, nobody is capable. You're not capable, you're just the best help I'm going to get. Which is pretty sad if you ask me. Which, I notice, you didn't." Zelenka shrugged, accustomed to Rodney's offensive outbursts, and continued working quietly as Rodney stormed around.

"Students," he heard Rodney mumbling under his breath. "Nobody ever said anything about students."
