Woo hoo! That's great!

Re: Comcast
I was at a client earlier this week that was having darned odd symptoms. Some sites would suddenly stop resolving. Not all DNS gone, just a few sites. And it would go away and come back semi-randomly.
Turns out that the cable modems Comcast has recently been installing (and by "recent" I got the impression we were talking "In the last year or two") include a feature called Smart Packet Detection." This feature is not used by Comcast, and it is either not well documented by the manufacturer or at any rate Comcast tech support doesn't have a lot of information about it. But they do know that this feature has been causing trouble for some users, including this DNS bug (my client lost access to several Comcast servers, which was particularly annoying.)
The tech that I talked to reached into the modem remotely and reset or cleared out something, and the problem went away. I was not clear (and I don't know that he knew) if this was a permanent fix for my client.
Unfortunately, cable modems are not available without this feature anymore.
Anyway, all this data might be of use to you?
