Jim and I got downtown for his surgery about 9:00 this morning. His appointment was for 9:45, but because of the train schedule, we got there early. turns out that there was some delay with either the surgeon or OR and he didn't go in until 1:30. Surgery was about 2 hours and another 2 hours in the recovery room.
They found lots of pus in the lymph/salivary gland area. The surgeon also found some "iffy looking cells" that he sent for biopsy. The cells could be the CLL cells or it could be lymphoma. I'm betting that the iffy looking cells are the CLL and that the primary problem is/was infection. I'm really annoyed with the Loyola C&T for not even considering infection as the problem and I'm really annoyed that they discontinued the IV antibiotics last December after 2 days. I think that a lot of this could have been avoided.
In any case, he's likely to be at Northwestern for the rest of the week since they couldn't completely close the incision until all the pus and infection drains out. He's in a post-op room and will be moved to a regular room tomorrow. I'll be working tomorrow, and going to visit him during a long lunch. he's already asking me to bring him the laptop. ;)
If any of the locals want to visit him later in the week, I'm sure he'd enjoy it. I will not be able to get to Northwestern as much as I'd like because of the distance. I have a very understanding supervisor, but I am very short on leave time because of his lengthly illnesses this year. Email me at susan @ sisterfar dot com for more details. Phone calls will be appreciated, too.
