In the same vein, there are names for countries that are given to them by their neighbors that don’t connect easily to what we’d call those countries in English.

For example, a lot of tribes might call themselves ‘The People’, while a neighboring tribe would call them ‘those horse-stealing thieves to the West’.    The tribe we call the Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas (”those like us”), and the Sioux (who the European-Americans ran into first) called them something that was corrupted into Cheyenne.

Here’s a set of neighbor names: Who are they referring to?

  1. Německo (comes from a word for ‘mute’, probably because ‘they don’t speak our language’) (Germany in Czech, and something similar in a number of other languages - kayshapero and peteralway got close enough)
  2. Gruziya (those dudes in the mountains) (Georgia in Russian - calimac got it)
  3. Yunanistan (from a local tribe of these folks closer to the speakers of this language)
  4. Khitai (from a group of barbarians who conquered that country in ancient times) (China in Russian - aisb23 got it)
  5. Węgry (those guys are part of this larger tribe we already knew about)
  6. Crna Gora (major geographic feature) (Montenegro AKA  "Black Mountain" in various South Slav languages - jcw_da_dmg got it)
  7. Lenkija (guys plowing an open field for the first time)
  8. Venäläinen (The Germans called them something like this, and that’s good enough for us)(Russia in Finnish, axegrrl got it)
  9. An Ríocht Aontaithe (Irish Gaelic for the United Kingdom - pgdudda got it)
  10. Maďarsko (variant of the name these guys call themselves, after a legendary ancestor) (Hungary in Czech  - pgdudda got it)
  11. Rìběn (they live to the East where the sun comes up) (Japan in Chinese - pgdudda got it)
  12. Měnggǔ (Mongolia in Chinese - pgdudda got it)
  13. Pays-Bas (lowlanders) (Netherlands in French - pgdudda  got it)
  14. Yuènán  (The southern kingdom of the Yue tribes) (Vietnam - mbcrui got it)
  15. Éguó (Russia in Chinese - pgdudda got it)
  16. Olaszország (some local tribes to the southwest were dominated by these people; we’re calling the dominators by the same name we give to the dominated)
  17. Tyskland (Germany in Danish - aisb23 got it)
  18. Atrpatakan (land of the burning oil pools)
  19. Ruotsi (rowboaters)
  20. Rakousko (name of a border fortress between the two countries)
  21. Allemagne (Germany in French - axegrrl got it)
  22. Frankreich (France in German - axegrrl got it)
  23. Chūgoku (China in Japanese - pgdudda got it)
  24. Xīzàng
  25. Tschechien (Czech Republic in German - axegrrl got it)
