How to settle the Georgian situation:

Aug 14, 2008 18:13

  1. Escort all Georgians safely out of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.  Those borders were drawn as goofily by Stalin (1931 for Abkhazia, 1922 for South Ossetia) as those drawn by the Brits of Iraq or Pakistan, and have no connection to reality.
  2. Let the Ossetians and Abkhazians have their damn places as ‘autonomous areas’, which will be subsumed by the Russians, who will then have to deal with yet another restive set of Caucasian minorities.  Their problem now and their responsibility to keep from becoming a den of thieves like Moldova.
  3. Have a two-mile DMZ (one mile on each side) on the borders of both states.  Set up serious fences, patrolled heavily by the UN, with orders to Shoot To Kill for the next 40 years.   Have the Russians pay for this.  In advance.
  4. Instead of trying to build up an Army that it can’t support and is pretty useless against the Russians, have the Georgians commit to a major economic revival in Georgia with major backing from the EU and the USA.  Do it right.
  5. Get the Russians to seriously pledge money to rebuild Abkhazia and South Ossetia properly.
  6. Get everyone to prosper and stay out of each other’s hair.
