I always have people who come in to the whole thing late, or have forgotten key parts and go 'wha' when something comes up about the twins. The name thing in particular always gets people.
To me, the bond that the girls have and the yearning they had for each other is the real story. When I talk to people about this - especially the few people who have found themselves in a similar situation - I point out that the real point of this is the relationship between the children. If there is none, you can't and shouldn't *force* it. If there is one, you're going to have to deal with all of the ramifications that that brings. It means you sacrifice things like Worldcon because your travel budget has gone to sibling trips.
I love animals and pets, but I'm screamingly aware of the duty for another life that you pick up with a pet. Because of that, I would find it hard to justify a pet if I lived alone. And in this case, I have seen more situations where twins were re-separated because the parents were not willing to deal with the differentials between the households for the sake of the kids. It's not holy rollers versus hippies so much as big differences in the ability of the parents to be able to deal with anyone else's quirks.
