The turning of the wheel, the turning of the year

This morning while I was out walking the dog, we heard and saw the first geese of the season, heading approximately east-to-west over southern Bloomington. They were honking to beat the band, and I could hear them distantly long before they flapped into my line of sight. I guess there was some rush, because they were flying pretty fast, and they were out of sight and hearing in about a minute. I wasn't feeling rushed; I stood and stared after them for a few minutes.

The thing that I noticed about the flocks - I say flocks because there were two different 'v' shapes in the sky - was that their 'v's weren't very good. I always thought that geese made nice well-balanced V shapes, stringing out on their lines with bold purpose, looking like they were set with a ruler. These geese, though, formed two different groupings, one in front of the other, and each consisted almost exclusively of the left-hand of the 'v'. Of the right-hand side, there were perhaps one or two birds, and then bright blue sky, startling in its emptiness.

It was warm today, like Spring is supposed to be. It's going to be colder again tomorrow, though. I guess Winter's still holding on, for a little bit longer.
