These are translations from an older issue of Wink Up. Highlights from the first part include Shintaro Morimoto explaining how he can surf inside his head despite never actually trying, Shintaro Kishimoto's description of a sea cucumber that he saw, Reia Nakamura's reasons for hating the ocean, the weird and dangerous job that Kei Kurita wants to try, and Yuuya Otsuka's "help" button on a deserted island. Highlights from the second part into Reia Nakamura's (yes, he appears twice) pet turtle, the strange place that Wataru Miura practices acrobatics, and some interesting information about Ryuuichi Tanimura's school. Go To Sea!
We asked about the marine sports and all the other things they’d want to try on a southern island. We also asked about Shintaro Morimoto’s current events as he does his best in the stage-play [Playzone 2010].
Shintaro Morimoto: The marine sport that I want to try is surfing! I’ve never even tried it once, but in my head it feels like “I can surf,” which is kind of cool, right (smile)? In my mind, I can imagine surfing even though I’ve never rode a surf board, but if I tried it in real life… it’d probably be hard. For the time being, I can swim 25 meters, so at least I probably wouldn’t drown if I tried.
Right now it’s [PLAYZONE] every day. The choreography instructor is having me challenge many genres of dance, and it’s a lot fun. I’ve seen Tsubasa-kun dance on television before, but this is the first time I’ve seen his dancing up close. He’s very intense. Yara-kun’s dancing is amazing too! As a completely beginner, I get unbelievable nervous since there are so many talented people around me. There’s a scene at the end where we dance on a big staircase, and the choreography for that scene was particularly difficult. The members of ABC-Z are also naturally talented, so it became a learning experience for me. All of the sempai are really nice. At the press conference, Tsubasa-kun patted my head gently, and that made me very happy. Yara-kun always makes me laugh, and whenever Yara-kun is there, the atmosphere becomes cheerful. By the end of this summer, I should be able to grow better like the people around me!
Shintaro Kishimoto: To put it simply, I love playing in the ocean and the pool, so I want to try everything. Something that I’ve already tried is diving and snorkeling with fins and goggles. I challenged that when I went to Bali, Indonesia in my third year of elementary school. The water was super ultra clear, and there were so many beautiful fish. There were many mysterious things on the bottom of the ocean; I remember seeing a grim-looking sea cucumber. Since I’ve already gone snorkeling, next I want to try scuba diving in Hawaii! My mom has been to Hawaii so many times and she told me: “it’s a wonderful place, someday we have to go together” but it doesn’t seem practical right now. It’d be nice if someday I were able to go.
Reia Nakamura: You know, I don’t really like the ocean. Because the water is so salty that if you swallow just a little bit, the salty taste will stay in your mouth for around 30 minutes, right? And if you have even a tiny little cut, if saltwater gets in it, it hurts a ton. It seems like fish could be poisonous and that’s scary, and aren’t tetrapods like the wharf roach super disgusting? That's why I like playing in a river or pool better. But I guess I might be a tiny bit interested in surfing. My dad surfed when he was in university, and he said that he’d teach me how to do it. But rowing out on the board into the open sea, which is called “paddling” seems hard work. I’m good a swimming though, so I should be okay. Since I swim about 1500 meters a day. If it’s an ocean where there are no poisonous fish, no wharf roaches, and not a lot of salt, I’ll want to surf in it (smile).
Kei Kurita: I’m in the volleyball club at school, so I want to try playing beach volleyball! I can’t go to practice a lot, so I’m still really bad. And I can’t spike at the net (smile). But I’ve learned how to serve properly! It’d definitely be fun if one sunny day I were able to go to the beach and play volleyball. But you need two people to play, and the ground is sand so it’d probably really, really hurt! Salt water makes my body shiver, so I don’t like going in the ocean very much. If I was going to go to Hawaii, I’d like to try going somewhere like New York. I like tall places, so I’d like to try to climb the Statue of Liberty. Rather than doing marine sports, I’d like to have the job of cleaning the windows of tall buildings from the outside… Or something like that (smile).
Yuuya Otsuka: I want to try scuba diving! 2 or 3 years ago my parents said: “how about you try it?” but I was too much of a chicken so I passed on my chance. I want to try diving, but jellyfish are so scary. When I went to the beach before, I discovered a dead jellyfish. That scared me so much that I wouldn’t even put my toe in the ocean. If it was an ocean where “here there isn’t even a single jellyfish or shark” I’d like to try. Also, I want to try doing a survival challenge with everyone on a deserted island in the south. We’d make a fire, go fishing in the ocean, and gather fruit. If there were jellyfish there? I’d press the “help” button and someone would come save us!
Objective
We asked about their summer goals, the things they want to do and the things they want to prepare before the new semester starts.
Reia Nakamura: Right now, I’m keeping the turtle I caught as a pet. I found him in my neighborhood’s pond, a little green turtle. I’m the one that takes care of him, and there are times that I think that it’s troublesome. My mom told me that: “if you don’t take care of him properly, you can’t play games for a week,” but I think that would be a bad motive for taking care of him. That’s why I want to become someone who wants to take care of the turtle regardless of the conditions before the new semester starts.
Wataru Miura: I want to learn how to backflip before the new semester starts! I’m taking individual gymnastics lessons at the big supermarket in my neighborhood, so next time I’m going to try. My dad can do backflips and back handsprings so he sometimes taught me how to do them before I entered the juniors, but it’s dangerous if you don’t have mats to practice on, after all… It became that sort of thing. I’ve practiced becoming flexible, and now I can do the splits. I want to be able to backflip by the time the new semester starts, and to back handspring before by the time the year ends!
Ryuuichi Tanimura: There have been lots of where I exercised and stuff to the breaking point and then caught a cold over the summer. It’s as if when I have fun, I get a fever. I thought it would end up really bad after this year’s SUMMARY was over, but actually I’ll be going to my boarding school soon. After elementary school my school has boarding facilities, and I want to live in them, so even though I’m doing my best in SUMMARY, I’m doing so in a way that won’t make me get a fever. Another thing is, Rubix cubes are popular at my school, so over the summer I want to practice so that I’ll be able to solve them quickly!
