War Kids Chapter 5
It took me more than an hour to start moving like normal again. My hands were still unsteady, but I managed to grab my gun. I aimed it towards the wall, still shaking a little, and slowly pulled the trigger. All of a sudden, before I could shoot, that man’s smile popped into my head. “Agh!” I yelled, falling on my butt. “What the fuck is wrong with me?” As I rubbed my butt, I got on my feet and stared out the window again. What was Hiro doing talking to that soldier? What were they talking about?
Beep! Beep! Beep!
In panic, I shot a good three rounds at my alarm clock before the noise stopped. I looked at the alarm clock, and then at my gun. “Fuck!” I shouted. My now destroyed alarm clock was hanging on its wire off the side of my desk. “Now I have to buy a new one!”
I grabbed the ruined piece of shit and threw it into my trash can. I tried to remember why I set my alarm clock so early in the morning. When I thought more about what today was, I finally realized it was the death anniversary of my parents. How long has it been? Two years? I opened the top drawer of my side desk and pulled out an old picture of my parents and I. The corners were burnt and the photo was extremely delicate. It was the only picture I had of us as a family before they died. We were all smiling; we were so happy back then. I was between my parents; my dad on the left, mom on the right. They were holding my hands as we stood in front of our house. I was probably twelve years old at the time; the year they were murdered.
I could feel myself tearing up, but before I had the chance to wipe my tears, there was a knock on the door. In one move I slipped the picture back in, closed the drawer, and pulled my gun out, aiming at the door. “Who is it?” I demanded.
It took the person five seconds to answer. “It’s Aoi.”
Aoi? Oh shit, that girl from the camp. What’s she doing here? I slid my gun between my back and pants before walking up to the door. I opened it. “What’re you doing here?” I asked, sounding more annoyed than welcoming.
“Um, I just wanted to give you this.” She stuck her hands out with a gun case. I took it into my hands and opened it; there was a loaded gun. “It’s a present from Chengwong,” she said. “He wanted to thank you for helping us out during that ambush.”
I was a little confused, but accepted the gun anyways. It was a Grandpower K100, Slovak semi-automatic pistol. It was a traditional black, and a little heavy due to the bullets inside of it. “So this is my reward?” I took the gun out of its case and moved it around a little.
“Yeah.”
I slipped the gun into my pants and asked, “So does every War Kid have to survive an ambush before being accepted into the cult?” I chuckled a little.
“Its not a cult. It’s a family.” She sounded pissed, as if I had hurt her feelings.
I didn’t know her that well, so I didn’t say anything back. I just apologized. “Sorry.” I walked into my house to place the gun case on my desk, but Aoi came in without my permission. When I turned around to tell her to get out, she was already searching around my kitchen. What the fuck is with people and just barging into my house?! I didn’t want to yell and I didn’t want to get mad. But I most certainly wanted her out of my fucking house.
“You’ve, uh, got a nice place,” she said, trying to hide her lie. When she opened my refrigerator, a cockroach crawled out from underneath it. “Eek!” she yelled and jumped back. “Shinta! There was a cockroach!”
I didn’t bother responding due to the fact that I was laughing too hard to even get an audible word out. I was forced to bend forward because of the pain in my stomach. I even started to tear up a little.
“What’re you laughing at?!” Aoi shouted in anger.
I tried saying something; anything to get me back to normal. “You… Cockroach… Jumped… ‘Eek!’” I couldn’t take it. After saying ‘Eek’, I was gone. I laughed and laughed and laughed until I couldn’t breathe anymore.
Aoi stood there with her arms crossed in front of her chest and pouting. Five seconds later she kicked me in the stomach.
The pain going through my stomach now was a hundred times worse than before. “FUCK!” I yelled as I fell onto the floor. I held onto my stomach and to dear life. “What… the… fuck…!”
“That’ll teach you to laugh at me!” she said before kicking me one more time in the stomach.
“FUCK!!”
“Yeah, who’s laughing now?”
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry! Just don’t kick me anymore!” I begged after coughing up some blood.
“Hmph.” She flipped her hair to her side and turned her back at me. “Don’t make fun of me. I’ll kill you,” she threatened, and I believed her.
After pushing myself back up and wiping the blood off my lips, I suddenly realized something. “Hey, Aoi,” I called.
“Yeah?”
“How did you know where I lived?” I don’t remember telling anyone where I lived. I mean, Hiro found me on chance, but how could Aoi possibly know where I lived?
“Oh, that’s easy. Chengwong instructed the twins to follow you after the ambush. It’s a requirement for Chengwong to know where every War Kid lives,” she answered.
“The twins?” Oh right, those two from the cult, uh, I mean family. What were their names again…?
“Kenta and Shengwong do their jobs well. That’s probably why you didn’t know.”
That’s right! Kenta and Shengwong! Wait, twins? Kenta? Shengwong? That doesn’t match up. Ugh, whatever. I have no time for this. I need to go to my parents’ grave. “Yeah, I guess.”
“You know, they’re the only twins in our family.”
“Oh really?” I really didn’t care. I just wanted her to leave. I needed to go. How am I going to make her leave? “Um, Aoi, I kind of have somewhere to go, so…”
“Oh, I’ll come with!” she offered with joy.
“Um, it’s a personal thing, so you probably shouldn’t,” I told her.
“No really, I have nothing else to do today,” she insisted.
“It’s really personal. You can’t come.” I sounded more serious this time and I guess she took the hint because she finally backed off.
“Okay, sorry for pushing it,” she said, more sincere. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Uh, yeah, sure.”
“The camp’s been moved more north. You can’t miss it.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Shinta.”
“Right.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.” She walked out of my house, and down the street. Before she could get too far, I called out to her. “Aoi!”
She turned around as if on que. “Yeah?” she answered.
“Um.” I was nervous for some reason and couldn’t look at her eye-to-eye. I ended up looking at the ground for a bit and rubbed the back of my neck. I finally looked at her and said, “Thanks.”
She smiled at me and it was so beautiful. The way she smiled made my heart beat faster. It made me want to smile too and just looking at her like that made me happy. “You’re welcome.” She turned back around and continued walking down the street.
That smile… I placed my hand on my heart and it was certainly beating faster than usual. Her smile… I looked back into my house, then the kitchen. At that moment I remembered the scene that happened between us just a few moments ago. I was laughing, wasn’t I? I smiled. It’s been a while since I’ve laughed like that.
A/N: Hope you enjoyed a little silliness in the story :P Next chapter is heartbreaking... Get ready to :'(
