What is the Iowa Straw Poll, you ask? Candidates pay $$$ for a tent at a big fairgrounds, and then pay for tickets at $30 a pop to hand out to people who can then come and vote any way they want. (I think you can also pony up the $30 yourself, but what self-respecting conservative would do that?).
Other people have commented that it is basically a measure of how right-wing you are. Nate Silver analyzed the results of previous straw polls and found that they have a strong predictive value as to who would win the Iowa Caucus (which is in January).
