As described hereCall it a draw in Wisconsin. It's hard to claim victory when you lose two seats in your Senate to recall elections. But Democrats' goal was three seats, thereby seizing majority control of the Senate, and they came up one short. There is one swing Senator -- a Republican who voted against some of Scott Walker's legislation which ( Read more... )

well, the goal of the recall was to take back the Senate. They failed. Republicans goal was to keep the Senate. They succeeded.

Alright, we'll call it a draw

There was no stated Republican goal that I ever saw. The Republicans succeeded in losing two seats that they previously held. That's a loss, no matter how you try to spin it.

For the Republicans to have succeeded by any sane definition of the word, they needed to turn back all the recalls (or at least net zero, which won't happen). Republican candidates who were elected just nine months ago were unceremoniously tossed out of office by their constituents! Spin it however you like, but that's a pretty dismal showing.

Which is not to say the Democrats succeeded. Because they did not, by their own definition. But they certainly made it more problematic for legislation to be passed by the Senate than it would have been before, so they gained something. The Republicans gained nothing, and in fact, lost something. Not control, but they lost certainty to be sure.

Which is why I conclude the whole thing was a draw. Neither side can realistically look at the outcome and say "we done good".
